leadtek 9532 trouble!

Hi, help needed with the leadtek 9532. I’m using the leadtek with the xda 11 and tom-tom navigator 3.01. The receiver works ok until the engine is started then the signal is lost. I then need to switch the engine of wait around five minutes then signal returns, once the engine is started again the signal is lost !
I drive an old car (triumph Herald) could the engine be affecting the signal or is the fault with the receiver? I have the power supply (cigarette lighter) wired directly to the battery and capacitors on the coil and plug leads to avoid any interference

The problem could be with starting the engine.....

When you crank the engine over, the voltage available to other things like the reciever will significantly drop, this is why you'll notice the lights dim if you try starting at night. Try leaving it all connected and ready to go once your car's running, and see if it re-aquires the sats, it may solve the problem. If not, look at upgrading the electrics.

Has the car got an alternator or a dynamo fitted? If its a dynamo, then the whole electrickery system will be made in simpler times, when the idea of making things from silicone was witchcraft. Fitting an alternator may help, theres loads of stuff on this on the classic car websites. But i'd also be inclined to look into fitting a bigger battery, to lessen the voltage drop when starting. Remember old cars and modern electronic devices can work harmoniously, they sometimes just nead coaxing.
