... may be I'm being a bit picky here, but shouldn't the 'MultiMap definition' be 'Streetmap Conversion'? |

Just a quick note to say that the app on the link
http://www.callnetuk.com/home/shanks/OSGridConv.exe
works as a little standalone on the PPC and so you don't need to be online, or have a full PC version of excel to do the conversion. This obviously means you can do this in the field (literally)
Its a very good little app |

Here is the official program from OSUK, OSNI & OSI for converting WGS84 / ETRF89 co-ords to national grid UK / N Ire / & Rep. Of Ireland and vice versa. Batch processing of co-ords also available

I've also been working on a Pocket PC utility to do the OSGB WGS conversion - in both directions, several formats - then show it on the TomTom map. Not having the TomTom SDK it's a little Heath Robinson, but it works for me.
I'd be interested in any opinions of it. Particularly whether or not it works on Pocket PC 2002, which I can't test.

Barry,
I've just downloaded your OSGB converter to have a play, as I go camping, meaning I often have to find places that cannot be reliably found by Post Codes, let alone by TTN3 (even with Niels' excellent postcode utility).
A lot of campsites are located by grid reference in the larger listings books, just tried a few and they all locate spot on with your fantastic little utility.
Plus, it's quite amusing watching it "type" the co-ordinates into TTN3
Fantastic little program, Heath Robinson? Maybe - Useful? Absolutely
Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Please could you indicate what versions of TomTom and Windows you're on, so I can start building a list of what it's known to work on? I only have the one PDA myself, so testing facilities are rather limited...
tramcar - please could you clarify the software you're using as above and the symptoms of the problem, e.g. does it just not type at all, or type in the wrong fields, or it works but displays the wrong place on the map, etc. If it doesn't seem to be typing, what happens if you use it with something like Pocket Word or an empty Note behind it rather than TomTom, do you get some text being typed in then?
I will also try to get an animation on the web site in the next few days, so that you can watch what's supposed to be happening and then see where your experience differs. No promises how quickly that'll happen - damn day job keeps getting in the way of these more interesting things... _________________ Barry Davies

Hi Barry
I have just discovered your osgb converter and loaded it onto an IPAQ rx3715. The first time I used it it went straight to my home address perfectly spot on but I cannot get it to do so again. No matter what co-ordinates I put in it always navigates to within a few degrees of Enniskillen. I tried pasting into Word with 3 different references (2 in Essex & 1 in Notts.)and these are the results
0080855w542127n
0080631w542125n
0080456w542142n as you can see not quite right (unless it's trying to tell me something!!) . I am using tt3 & Windows Mobile 2003. Trust this is of some use even if you cannot help me personally

Hi Michael
I've not seen this behaviour with it myself so am stumped.
Please could you let me know exactly what you've chosen in the drop-down lists and what you're typing into the boxes each time, in order to get the output values you've given me above (which, as you say, are valid output strings).
I'll then try to replicate the results so that I can identify and fix the problem.
I've recently made it run with OziExplorerCE too, so I was getting around to releasing an update for it anyway. I'd like to fix this bug before doing so.
Thanks _________________ Barry Davies

Hi Barry
I set the boxes as follows:-
Grid box to British National Grid
Format to 2 OS Easting/Northing
East to 005103
North to 513331 This co-ordinate is the last one on the list and should take you to Ilford in Essex
Hope this helps

Hi there,
The numbers you're using, when treated as a British National Grid reference, do indeed define a position near Enniskillen. (Some conversion tools reject them completely, as this is a position you wouldn't normally define using BNG - try inputting them on Streetmap, for example).
So, I don't think this is a BNG reference. I looked up Ilford station in TomTom (Find - Address - Ilford - Ilford), saved it as a POI, dumped the file to ASCII, and this gave me TomTom's WGS84 lat/long position for Ilford station.
I then input this to my tool and got the converted positions as shown below. From this I suspect that the coordinates you have may be a WGS84 lat/long in Degrees, Minutes and Seconds format - the latitude matches, although the longitude is a bit out - if I treat your numbers as East, you're out near Southend; or if as West, you're in Berkshire.
Can you shed any more light on where you're getting these co-ordinates from? If they are WGS84 DMS format, you can input them to my tool in by selecting WGS84 DMS format, or easier still you could type them straight into the boxes in the TomTom Go to coordinates dialog.
OS British National Grid
Grid Reference: TQ 43597 86478
Full Easting: 543597
Full Northing: 186478
WGS84 Latitude
North 51.5589200 degrees or
North 51 degrees 33.5352 minutes or
North 51 degrees 33 minutes 32.1 seconds
WGS84 Longitude
East 00.0700700 degrees or
East 00 degrees 04.2042 minutes or
East 00 degrees 04 minutes 12.3 seconds _________________ Barry Davies
