My Holux 230 is on the way now I need help deciding which navigation software to purchase. First let me say there is not a package out there that seems to have all the features I want. But based on features and price I think I have it narrowed down to Mapopolis or Destinator 3. I live in the US and wanted to get peoples opinions on the software, esp. anyone that has used both.

Also are the POI's in the Mapopolis software as comprehensive as online? I went to the Mapopolis website and typed in a previous employer and was impressed that it came back with a location.

You will have to reveal a bit more of your requirements before we can make a recommendation. You would not want to decide on Mapopolis because of the POIs (Destinator may be more user friendly there).

But there are huge differrences in the way these two programs operate, and these differences can certainly influence your decision more than those unhappy POIs.

Remember, POIs are outdated as soon as they are released (I like this word). Only user community based POIs make sense in the long run (like TomTom has).

Ok Here is what I would like in the navigation software:

A nice clear human like voice with options, e.g. British woman.
Offline route planning. I want to be able to set up my routes on the PDA without being connected to the GPS.
Spoken Street Names
Display of Bridges, Water, RR tracks, etc.
Permnant Avoids
Avoid Blocks
Avoid Highways
Shortest Route
Fastest Route
Least Turns
Minimize Surface Streets
Ability to add POI
Fast rerouting.
Ability to save trips and reverse routes, e.g. when traveling for work it would be nice to plan the trip from the airport to the office, then from the office to the hotel and finally just have the unit reverse the airport to the office when I am returning.

If there are anyother key features or features people just love about one product or another please let me know.

Ha funny... very well contained requirements indeed

Now back to reality:

A nice clear human like voice with options, e.g. British woman.
- only WAV files can deliver that . TomTom, Routis
Offline route planning.
- supported by most packages
Spoken Street Names
- not possible with WAV files. supported by CoPilot, Mapopolis, PocketMap
Display of Bridges, Water, RR tracks, etc.
- supported by most packages
Permnant Avoids
- TomTom, Destinator, PocketMap
Avoid Blocks
- supported by most packages
Avoid Highways
- supported by most packages
Shortest Route
- supported by most packages
Fastest Route
- supported by most packages
Least Turns
- Routis
Minimize Surface Streets
- what's that?
Ability to add POI
- TomTom
Fast rerouting.
- supported by most packages
Ability to save trips and reverse routes
- CoPilot, Mapopolis

In a nutshell, you can't have all of what you want, at least not in one package. Have a look here

Thanks for the response. I hate reality. I have been using the comparison database I was just hoping that someone would chime in with why I should purchase one package vs another.

Great website with lots of good information. Thanks.

yes, reality is kind of bitter sweet.

The good thing is you can test drive Mapopolis (it's free for nine days) If you don't like it then you can still go with Destinator
