Successfully installed the speed cameras/voices to my DriveSmart 66. On my old TomTom device I could specify the distance from the POI to the alert sound being played. Is this possible on the Garmin? How does the Garmin device know the distance on approaching the POI to issue the alert sound? For example on average speed cameras I want the alert very close to the camera position as I approach, whereas for a 70mph Gatso, the alert is wanted at a considerable distance before the camera is passed by.
There doesn't appear to be anything in the .CSV files to specify this ... it must be set by the device itself. Hope this makes sense!

TIA James

Agree

The default distance is 33 or 36 secs, can't remember now

Another reason I created the CSV to GPX Converter as that can specify alert distances

Thanks for your reply. I just discovered that POI Loader has a 'manual' option - I have been using 'express (recommended)' - and the manual option requests distance before the alert sounds, which is what I am wanting. I'll give it a try - there are not too many rows in the .CSV to make this arduous - and see if it does what I want Smile Wish me luck!!

Just noticed that the device is not using the .BMP files for the icons, instead using its own (I presume). At least the custom voices (.WAV files) work and I actually see the POI on the map.

(sigh) things were so much easier on the old TomTom devices! But their products are useless now for use with custom POI's.

Distance is an odd measurement because 20 to 70 mph makes a huge difference to alert timing

As a last resort, if you want complete control based on distance and time then have a look at the Converter, * recommend V2 as it's quicker to setup:

Another consideration is the alert trigger. Garmin are known to not produce an alert if it considers you are below the limit and not accelerating. The Converter forces an alert regardless of speed

Well now! Using the 'manual' setting on POILoader doesn't seem to work properly... Gatso cameras still triggered far too early, wheras SPECs, which I had set to a very low distance now didn't trigger at all!

On to the awesome Converter! Followed the excellent instructions to the letter and all went well until just before starting POILoader. It found a number of missing files, both WAV and BMP, which I have never actually seen in the database ZIP file before. I added appropriate files to my working folder and proceeded. AT LAST I have a Garmin that triggers like my old TomTom did! Not had a chance to check redlight yet (none close by). I received two alerts for one GATSO in fairly quick succession, although there is only the one camera and no others within a mile. Not really a problem... the additional warning is fine.

Amazing application and deserves a few mugs of coffee! THANK YOU for your, and walkerx's work in creating this superb utility.

I'll report back after I've done more mileage and checked more thoroughly.
