Good point, the space would not be marked as free until you empty the trash if you did delete files on the 940 whilst connected to the Mac.

Indeed, considering you don't use one, I was amazed you knew that they didn't show the space as free until trash was emptied, top marks.

Not too sure if the term Flush/ Trash is correct but Darren will know what I am on about with respect to the MAC as this is something that has caught a few users out previously when removing files with a MAC - Mike |
Good point. I hate the way the Mac handles trash, this often catches me out. However, as I said early on in this thread I reformatted the TT drive so that won't be a problem.

Personally I find it a useful safety blanket.
However, even when formatted, the Mac will still not report full capacity if files removed from it remain in the trash.

I find it the opposite. I only delete trash periodically, so I have backup against my own mistakes. However, because you cannot selectively choose files for permanent deletion I often delete trash when on a Windows system I wouldn't have had to. The sort of scenario where this is a real pain is suppose you are visiting someone and want to put a file from them onto your own flash drive, but you need to make some space on it first you end up emptying their system wide trash for them (and in their case, unlike mine it might be an integral/only backup strategy).

Trash is trash, if you don't want it to be trashed, why is it in the trash? It's not meant as a storage area for files you may want in future and your example is rather unusual.
Windows is different but that is because it is not a proper trash can, just another folder that happens to be called 'Recycle Bin'. In OS X it's called 'Trash' because you throw rubbish in there that you no longer want. Just like a real rubbish bin. You don't throw stuff in a real bin and then fish it out days later or leave it in there for months.
If you wish to selectively trash, then moves those files out of trash that you don't want deleted but really you need to stop using the trash as a storage folder for stuff you may want later!
Selective delete would be nice I suppose but then if I want something I either don't put it in Trash or I remove it from there before I empty it.
Anyway, this isn't a forum for Mac OS X issues, was the problem caused by files in your Trash or not?

Well, actually sometimes I do.
However, as you say this is not a Mac OS X discussion, but if as you say even a format will not free up the space, what am I meant to do ?
Anyway, I hope to receive my micro SD card in the next few hours. I will try that.

Well if it's not showing the correct space on your Mac or your PC and you don't have any deleted files in the Trash then it would seem safe to assume that there is a deeper issue with the flash memory.
If that is the case then we'd need to look at rescue utilities to see if the memory issue can be corrected but, given the issue may well return, I'd do as you are suggesting and move to using a memory card instead.

Now making progress. Installed the micro SD, copied Navcore files to it with Finder and now TT Home seems to see it sensibly. Ran the update including Western Europe map, but now I get invalid map archive, which roughly speaking is where I came into this thread about 2 months ago. It all started when I tried to update my map (remember the old Flanders & Swan song, twas on a Monday morning the gas man came to call etc...).
When I get a chance later I will try to download a new map (if I can work out how to do that).

I've got it working now with the micro Sd card, however still a bit confused.
Each time it asks me which device I want to use I select the memory card. However after doing a map update it installed it onto the internal memory, and I had to manually transfer the map to the SD card with Finder. It then worked but there are still oddities like I don't have the standard voices, but I do have a Homer Simpson one I bought. I guess I've just got to copy various things across from the internal, but it' a bit of a pain and just adds to my confusion when things don't work properly.
By the way, what determines which storage device the TT boots from stand alone ?

AIUI, it will default to the memory card as the boot device IF an system software is installed there.
