Steve you are right, the mount is a nightmare if you wish to plug in the ac power afterwards (akward) or if prior to mounting you think it has slide into place, but it hasn't so can fall out. When mounted properly it works great and is very stable, its just far too easy not to achieve this

However, along with a few other features on my wish list (Home button on main screen, map colour options like you say) it IS a great unit - and lets hope they release updates when the S300 comes out in January

Thanks for reply, and glad I am not the only one who has issues with it. As I have it mounted on the screen but touching the dash, makes plugging the power lead in afterwords out the question. (this also keeps it out of my field of view while driving) Halfords also listed it in store as having a "FM Transmitter", great for playing MP3's I thought, however, when I went back to ask why the menu was missing, the guy in store rang their helpdesk to be told the FM Transmitter was for the TMC. Not what I was lead to believe.
He was adimant that the S80D had TTS, which I have yet to hear it work, unless I am doing something wrong.

The FM is for TMC traffic info not sending voice through the car stereo (this is on the forthcoming S300 / Jan release pending) - the TMC feature is exclusive to Halfords on the S100 (all other retails don't have the TMC lead built it, which costs approx. £50 extra)

As far as I know the S80 doesn't have TTS - only the S90i has it (and now the S100) - to check it out, look in your UK Voices and look for named voices (Emily, etc.) IF they are there, these are only ones which speak road names

The UK version of the S80 does not have TTS (Text To Speech), the Australian market one does...

I've got the S300T for about a month and I am quiet happy Smile with it.

Things I like:
-Traffic alerts
-Quick GPS fix
-Interface
-Accuracy

Not so much:
-Traffic alerts missing option to "avoid" traffic automatically.. well at least I couldn't find how to enable this
-Mount is a hassle (as someone else mentioned before)
-Manual not detailed enough (took me a while to find the fast forward button for the "preview a route" function)
-School Safety Warnings (is warning me if it is 300 meters away and not on my route, but on a side street... drove me nuts)
-response when tapping on an item sometimes fast, sometimes slow...

Other observations:
-Scrolling seems to be much better with a screen-protector and using the back of the finger (fingernail)
-Heavy traffic around where I was caused the device to crash / automatic restart
-When driving against the sun or if the sun is in it's zenith maps not easy readable (I had a VDO 2010 before, was much better)

Cheers
Tom - Sydney

Hi all
I have put a post on the s100 thread. I did not want to double post.

For those interested, I came upon this on the Navman web site

Pricey isn't it? Wonder what makes it better than the S100?

I think they have made a slight error on that tech information
as 90MM cannot be claimed as "The World's Slimmest Sat Nav" by todays standards.

The device is actually only 13,5MM thick in reality which is very slim indeed, you would think their web site would show some consistancy though when making claims such as the "Worlds Best" - Mike

I wonder if they'll put out a firmware update at some point?

Hi DRP
I have been looking forward to the S300 in the hope that it would solve my replacement problems. I don't think it will. Firstly it only has W European maps loaded. Second the FM transmitter does not do what one would hope it does ie transmit to the car sterio. Third for what it offers, it's a bit pricey and for just a little bit extra the Mio Moov 580 EU Plus seems to offer a better package and comes from the same stable. However, it is only available in Europe and currently only in Slovenia and Estonia so far as I can ascertain.
Why doesnt someone make the perfect device. Am I asking too much Question

While I have an S100T not the S300 model, the S300 does transmit to the car stereo speakers - see page 50 of the manual http://www.navman.com/docs/manuals/navman-s-series-spirit-smartst2009-manual-en_gb.pdf

The software is really quite intuitive and innovative, but just isn't explained too well, so sometimes you can achive things (very easily) you thought were either difficult or just were not there. Often the case with todays manuals!!!

So, when will Navman cotton on to the current presumed illegality of the FM transmission of navigation instructions? TomTom have already blocked this function in updates on their models following Ofcom guidance - there are threads running on the TomTom forum all about this Question

Don't know about its legality, and with clear speakers like in the Spirit series, there really is no need, but its there anyhow and with Navmans update history, cannot see it being removed anytime soon. Or ever!!! If you don't want it, just don't use it

Well, I do want it. However, as to the legality you might like to read the thread that this came from.. This is a quote from TomTom.

Quote:
We understand that you are concerned about the recent change to the TomTom application which has disabled FM Transmission of navigation instructions. We deeply regret that it has become necessary for us to implement this change, as our FM Transmission technology was a unique innovation at the time of its release.

Unfortunately, due to recent legislation, it is no longer allowed to occupy an unused FM frequency unless audio transmission is constant. Because the signal that carries your TomTom's voice instructions is not constant (voice instructions are only given occasionally, as needed) it has now become illegal to transmit this kind of audio via FM radio transmission.

To save you reading the whole thread, have a look at page six. The thread is here
