I just like the banter regarding "free Subs" a few people try it on and it amuses me for the sake of 2 quid (half a bottle of magners).
I am pleased to hear that the RNLI has many fans , I work in East Cowes at the inshore lifeboat center we design and build Atlantic 75 and the new Atlantic 85's Before that I worked on many Severn Class All weather Lifeboats . we carry out Trials on the completed boats which can be fun if the weathers ok. We Also deliver the boats throughout the Uk and Ireland towing them behind a Mitsibishi shogun 4x4 and yes we use SatNav.

RNLI is one of the few collection boxes I put money into. Ever since I started doing the National Lottery I've had a fantasy about winning an enormous amount and one of the things I'd do is buy them a new lifeboat - I think they cost at least a million these days, but worth every penny.

The RNLI used to have a running costs page on their web site, but the link no longer appears to be valid.

In 2005, running costs averaged around £330,000 per day. For every £1 raised, 78p was spent on operations, 3p was spent on support and 19p was spent on fundraising.

Each launch costs thousands of pounds - a sobering thought.

Tell you what, why don't we all promise that next time we spot a new, removed or changed fixed camera, we'll PM it to Mr G at least three hours before we submit it to pgpsw?

We could all just log in as Mr G to report new cameras Laughing Laughing

aaahhh, a fellow cider drinker - we have even more in common.

I live right on the doorstep of the coastgaurd helicopter and have has a personal tour because I know someone who knows one of the pilots.

Very interesting, but they get paid whereas RNLI are all (except a few) unpaid volunteers.

That must be a good advert for the Shogun if you can tow a lifeboat to Ireland - or even anywhere in the UK come to that, considering you're on the Isle of Wight and surrounded by sea...

...or is it the satnav that keeps you afloat?? Laughing

I would have thought that you'd need more than a Shogun and satnav Rolling Eyes

No, actually, I was going to suggest that you buy your own Gatso and put it in your garden then paint white marks in the road...

...you could be the first to report it Laughing

...it might cost a little more than PGPSW membership though Crying or Very sad

Slightly back on topic, I guess, and in defence of PGPSW not being totally free for everybody, we should consider the running costs of this facility:

1) travelling costs which are spiralling along with fuel prices - but we all appreciate gadgets being road tested and PGPSW representation at events etc

2) time, effort and patience in keeping the forum online and moderated

3) the mind-boggling time and effort contributed by people like MaFt with the ''Forth Bridge' approach needed to keep the speed camera database updated

4) being kept up to date with new gadgets, news and events

5) peoples' persistence and charm required for obtaining competition prizes etc

...and countless other things that I've no doubt overlooked

What good value we are all getting!!

In comparison, how much are the various GPS manufacturers charging for speed camera updates after any 'free update' period has expired?

Snooper updates are £4.95/month
Road Angel updates are £3.99/month or £49/year

These are product-specific and that price doesn't include any of the other benefits of PGPSW
