Thieves detecting GPS in cars?

In several other topics we have been told by members that the on/off switch on the Go models is a software switch. That being the case, there must always be some electrical activity to detect the operation of the switch and then power the device up. It may be possible that this remaining activity can be detected (or it may not). So without the technical knowledge to jump either way, I'm open minded on this question.

Presumably, there is no way of switching off this background activity, since the battery can't be removed?
