Really? Have you looked at their accident record compared to ours? I've taught blue light and advanced courses, and spoken to numerous groups about driving. Invariably about 95% of any audience think their driving is 'above average', you may be one of those. Given that only 50% are 'above average' there is close to a 1 in 2 chance that if you think you're driving is above average it's actually not.
I've seen first hand the effect of those that were no doubt considered to be 'competent' drivers ... and who clearly were not. Most accidents occur because of excess speed. That's not necessarily to say 'over the limit' but just a driver not understanding what was suitable given the road/traffic/weather conditions and, most importantly, the competence of the driver, which in many cases is poor and far worse than the driver themselves believes to be their ability.
I hate to think what would happen if speed limits were raised. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way.

This thread has degenerated into a stupid rant. The law in UK national speed limit is 70MPH as you well know. To exceed it, even if you are as good a driver as Lewis Hamilton, is against the law. Discussing the pros and cons of the limit is totally pointless. Bring it up with your MP. They are the only people who can change it.
And regardless of what you say, driving at 140MPH on UK roads is also stupid because there are other people using the roads that have appalling standards of driving .

Well I should probably shut up but a couple of things. Firstly having driven pre 70mph motorway restrictions, and in a Morris Oxford, I learnt for myself that around 85mph things happened more quickly than I could safely cope with. Secondly now as an inveterate 65mph inside lane driver, I also regularly see bands of vehicles [60/70 at a time] sweep through at around 75/80mph eventually leaving me in lighter traffic - until the next wave. These bands of vehicles certainly seem to be driving too closely and must be a hazard? Cameras can curtail the worst excesses, but not everything. I'm quite hopeful about vehicles with sensors and autonomous braking systems. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]
