RIGHT! I've had enough...

I'M going to have the last word in this...

Here goes.. you ready?...

Quote:
Flame, flame, flame, troll, troll, troll, yada, yada, yada Burn In Hell

{now sobbing}

Please, why can't we all live in peace and harmony??

{runs around handing out flowers and cokes and stuff}

Okay, and finally...

{clears throat}

I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow-white turtle doves

(all together now)
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company
(That's the song I hear)
I'd like to see the world for once
(Let the world sing today)
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land
That's the song I hear
(That's the song I hear)
Let the world sing today
(Let the whole wide world keep singing)
A song of peace that echoes on
And never goes away

(Repeat 1st Verse and Chorus)

Put your hand in my hand
Let's begin today
Put your hand in my hand
Help me find a way

(Repeat Chorus til fade)

{Fades - not a moment too soon}

Um, bedbug, not a flame, but don't give up the day job . .

Darren , are you able answer the backups question that bedbug had - things like if we update the OS I know will un-JB but will it wipe the apps/data from Cydia or a modded Sygic with PGPSW cams? Can we just jailbreak again or do we have to JB then reload everything? Do we know about stuff in the m68ap.plist (e.g I've got the percentage battery on my 3g as it is on the 3gs)

I bet this is answered while I'm typing . .

Ta, Mike

From memory you have to run the updated iPhoneDev software and then simply restore in iTunes.

Of course the biggest drawback of JB is that you are always on the back foot waiting for them to update after Apple release an OS update.

I don't bother anymore but my wife's iPhone 1st Gen is Unlocked so she can use her T-Mob SIM but she isn't quite as keen as me to install every update so is happy to be on 3.0.

Thanks, sounds a bit suck it and see - not to much to do but will need the cameras - but probably as said before won't bother about updating to 3.1 unless something more useful for us poor 3G people comes out . . .

Is your wife's by any chance passed on by you when you got the newer toy? Don't have to answer - but guess where my 3G goes when my contract is out and/or next years model arrives!

Cheers Mike

I have also stuck with 3,0 for deliberate reasons:

1/ The update doesn't offer anything in way of importance to me and the way I use the device, security issues with MMS AFAIK was the last update (I don't use MMS)

2/ It avoids me waiting and messing around Jailbreaking it again.

I have to say since doing this I am more than happy as it lets me mess around with the files/ folders installed in the way I want to - For example when running low on space (mines only got 16GB to play with) I can remove large chunks of map files I don't need on the device.

It also offers the chance to add PGPSW speed cameras to Co-Pilot which works quite well, Sygic which handles them superbly and TomTom where they just get displayed on the map with no warnings - Mike

Indeed it was and daughter manages to grab the 3G because at the time there was no unlock for it and so she had the new PAYG SIm out of my 3GS and I continued with my old PAYG account.

Thanks guys,

I guess I'm going to wait for the 3.1 jb solution to arrive (and of course 3.1), by which time it will be less likely that Apple will release another update, until hopefully the next generation - at which point I hope to re-contract and update the 3G anyway.

I'm sure there'll be a million reasons to jb, but to be honest, other than adding speedcameras to Co-Pilot, all I want is 'Categories' - Apple's default application management (especially beyond springboard limits) is utterly lame for a company that can do UIs so well.

Thanks again for your input.

I doubt this is the case, you are using the software under licence in a similar manner to the PGPSW safety camera data. But in the case of Jailbreak the copyright protected software has been modified and distributed, then installed on your phone. T

This is not the case. The iPhone Dev team make a great play of the fact that you restore your phone with the standard Apple IPSW file, and then patches get applied to that. They do NOT distribute a modified copy.

Thanks for the clarity TonyD, I withdraw that comment.

The devil's got more advocates here than there's enough rotweilers for!

I/you/anybody can no more get an application for free with a JB as un-JB - unless its pirated - which no one is advocating. There you are, we've told 'em. There are plenty of free apps in the app store as well as in Cydia. Equally quite a lot of stuff on Cydia is paid for as well. I've yet to see anybody offering a pirate version of for example a nav app Sad Or do you know some way to get one onto a JB phone without paying?

And no more would I use it as you. JB'ing does not mean "you never have to pay for an app again".

I certainly don't however get permission from Apple and O2 every time I load an application from the APP store - and that's modifying its contents!

Clealry once Apple finally gets to be approved as god and a law entirely unto itself, we're all going to end up in the clink. See you there. We'll probably get let off though because there's an awful lot of people who've jailbroken and I can't see Apple (or O2)wanting to lose the revenue . . .

I've got my eye on a natty set of duds with a really neat arrow pattern

Cheers, Mike

You really are scraping the barrel here.

Of course jailbreaking doesn't mean you never have to pay for an app again, it DOES mean you don't have too though.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that you can get the latest TomTom application for free on an un broken phone? Dream on.

You DO get permission from Apple everytime you download from the official App store by either paying or downloading a free app in accordance with their t&c.

You seem to have a thing about prison, who mentioned anything about prison? apart from you!

Apple don't want to be God or a law unto themselves, they just want the same laws to protect them that protect the camera database on this site, ask any owner of this site if they want to be God just because they want to protect their business!

How would Apple or o2 lose revenue if people didn't jailbreak their phones and install unofficial software on their devices? in my book their revenue would increase!

classy? not - for Pete's sake - have you actually read what you are quoting? Or the context of the other emails?

I was saying precisely what you are? how in hell could you get a nav app e.g. TomTom for free?

Jailbroken or not I said paid apps have to be paid for - unless pirated. You are saying they don't have to!

I don't get permission from O2 - if you want to twist things you could say I do from Apple - so what. What is your point?

Prison - just referring to the possibility - or not - of Apple taking legal action - which is part of the series of postings you seem to have ignored. Ditto the lost revenue - if you take buyers out of circulation.

All meant to be light-hearted really - which most others seem to have understood. But given given your ill-considered fanboy rant - sorry posting - I suggest you read the other postings, including about flaming, in this thread, including solemn promises not to - and possibly stay out of the pub on the way home.

And I thought I didn't make sense . .
