Doesn't cover publishing pictures without permission and sounds petulant. Should read " by submitting images to PGPSW you grant permission for PGPSW to store, transmit, publish ON ITS OWN WEBSITE FOR THE SOLE PURPOSES OF.... etc."

What we have is a blanket "send us stuff, we will use it, if you don't want us to use it then don't send us it"

Other wise you end up with ridiculous lists that no one reads:

If you submit a camera's speed limit we will use that to add to, or amend, an existing speed limit on a camera.
If you submit a new camera location we will use that to add to, or amend, our database. Note that submissions contain a date and time and if you use one of our CamerAlert apps it will mean we will know where you were at what time.
If you submit a photo it will be used to help verify your submission. Note that photo submissions will be made available to the verifiers, moderators and the PocketGPSWorld.com team. The team is: MaFt, Darren, Mike, ROb, Lutz. The Moderators are: alix776, Andy_P, Anita, Bo Peep, Darren, DavidW, DennisN, Eldar, GerryC, GPS_fan, MaFt, mikealder, mostdom, Oldboy, Oldie, PaulB2005, philpugh, Privateer, RobBrady, Tim Buxton. The Verifiers are: MaFt, adriano, AliOnHols, alix776, Andy_P, Andy_Summ, Anita, Ash10, bestyman, blackbeamer, BMW330, Bo Peep, boblister, Border_Collie, bw2020, CaptCol, chris_w, cloggienl, Continental_Drifter, craiga, Darren, delbell, DennisN, Desborough, Devons, DuncanBerg, Eldar, essentialdriver, falkirk81, Gaulois, GerryC, GPS_fan, hartmill, haydenb, Howarduk, HughG, iCN520, Iepre, ihunter, inthe128, jackdeth, JassMan23, JaTe, jdg_32uk, JockTamsonsBairn, karlnewsome, kharrap, kittybritt, lancedavies, LastMile, lbendlin, Llan, M8TJT, mars.1, mightyyid, mikealder, MikeB, Nemrek, newtomoneowner, oddsock, Oldboy, Oldie, PaulB2005, philpugh, poacher, Privateer, RobBrady, RQMS, Sema_4, Shawz, Skippy, sky2000, smaragd, soweezy, swing, theripper, Tim Buxton, tsdinos, TVR, ukemaxxer, UsuallyLost. Please ensure you check back on a regular basis as the team, mods and verifiers may change.
Photos may also be used on the website and by PocketGPSWorld.com Ltd for various reasons including, but not limited to, examples of different camera types around the world, examples of what is not a camera, examples of a good submission, examples of a bad submission.
If you submit audio it will be used to help verify your submission. Note that audio submissions will be made available to the verifiers, moderators and the PocketGPSWorld.com team. If you submit direction data to us then we will use this to amend or add to existing data.

Personally I think that's a bit OTT and that no one will read it. Perhaps a better solution would be one that simply said "If you submit things to us we will use them. If you don't want us to use it then don't submit it." I wonder if it would be better to change it to that... oh, wait... hang on.....

Shouldn't that carry an acceptance of liability and indemnification for the propagation of incorrect information leading to prosecution ?

Just kidding, it's probably in the Ts & Cs somewhere ;)

Photos are funny. In these days of austerity we need a laugh. If the politically correct brigade had their way we would need permission to go to the lavatory, signed in triplicate.
Lighten up folks.

Wearing my verifier's hat for this post, I ask that everybody who submits a location to be verified does so in order that the PocketGPSWorld camera database can continue to be the best. If you get an award then that should be treated as a bonus.

As a verifier, I prefer to read relevant comments left by the submitter. CamerAlert allows people to submit photos and the right photo is worth a thousand words if it shows the location of the camera at the site.

MaFt does a great job of sorting out the obviously wrong submissions but please make it easier for the verifier who visits the site of your submission by sending in a photo or submitting comments about the site and where the camera was seen.

Regards,

"Not sure what the latter has to do with the former and I'd use ill informed rather then pathetic to describe the comments but, hey, it's the internet, home of the ill informed, land of the opinionated."

You said it ..... Twisted Evil

Many of the photos are amusing but I think you should remove or obscure the photos which personally identify living people especially as they were obviously sent to you in error.

I work with systems which hold sensitive information and although this stuff is a pain, it is a very serious business. The data controller at Pocket GPS World needs to understand the implications of the Data Protection Act and how it applies to the way you process data which could be used to identify living people. Similar laws exist in other EU states as required by EU directive 95/46/EC.

The principles of the Data Protection Act are that data which identifies living people must be:

1. Processed fairly and lawfully.
2. Obtained for specified and lawful purposes.
3. Adequate, relevant and not excessive.
4. Accurate and up to date.
5. Not kept any longer than necessary.
6. Processed in accordance with the “data subject’s” (the individual’s) rights.
7. Securely kept.
8. Not transferred to any other country without adequate protection in situ.

There are a few points that your data controller should consider:

Item 2. The data must be "obtained only for one or more specified and lawful purposes". I don't think a sweeping statement saying "we will use it" could be held to be a "specified purpose" as required by the act. Your description of the use of the data is far to broad, you need to specify what you are going to use it for. The tongue in cheek write up you did is a big step in the right direction, you need to formalise that.

Item 3. The data which is clearly sent to you in error is excessive for your requirements and not relevant to your purposes so you should delete it.

Item 5. As this data is not relevant, you should have disposed of it promptly.

Item 6 and 7. The photos are copyrighted by the person who created them. You cannot publish them without obtaining permission from the copyright holders.

In any case, common sense says that publishing people's obviously personal photos without their permission is likely to cause them distress, ridicule or embarrassment.

Other than that, keep up the good work folks!

I'm surprised that the quality of the "useful ones" was good enough, are there any guide lines for the content of these camera pictures, as the ones shown look quite random and not indicative of location.

Skippy: we're not identifying anybody. there are no names, not even user names, published. no countries or other info published. and yes, we do understand the DPA and have, before now, queried various things relating to usernames and 'personal' information etc with the data controller.

K13ehr: often we can look at the submitted location in streetview and see the same buildings, signs etc (albeit usually without the camera if the image is old) as in the submitted photo - this is good evidence that the submitted location and details are correct. also saying 'mobile van in layby' is useful - the verifier knows to look for a layby where a van may fit. a photo of that van in the layby is great evidence - while the verifier may look at the layby and think "hmm, that's not very wide, not sure a van could fit there" a photo of it would remove that doubt - even if the van was parked up on the curb we would know that the van can fit as we've seen a photo of it.

Thanks MaFt, I shall be more vigilant in future and try to find a few cameras, but I don't get too far from home these days, I'm doing a self build Motorhome right now so should be off and away by summer though, fingers crossed.

All I can say is that these photos could be worse. I remember the guy selling his Merc on Autotrader about 4 years ago. He uploaded the pics he had taken of the car and didn't check them. The two photos of his rather attractive girlfriend with no clothes on generated a substantial amount of traffic. He also included his mobile number! It took him or Autotrader about 4 days to realise that there was a problem.
