I'm amazed that such a large area of the country can be brought down by a problem in one building.
I would have thought a resilient system would have the facility to quickly switch to a backup running at another location.

a resilient system could be running at multiple sites such as failure of one doesn't cause an issue (original ideas behind Internet predecessor)
But resilience costs - so I suspect likes of Vodaphone will work on minimum possible and in event of catastrophic failure (e.g. building burns down) will accept a few days switching to placing higher loads on other nodes around country[/u]

Don't worry about it - they use TomTom Home to do regular backups. Laughing

I'm with Orange and they have done a reciprocal deal with T-Mobile so my phone automatically switches to use their network if there is no Orange signal available. Would that have helped in this case?

If it would... Why aren't ALL phone companies encouraged or even regulated to enter into reciprocal deals to use each others networks in situations like this?

And this wouldn't help anyone as yet because Everything Everywhere (Orange-T-Mobile joint venture) is currently voice and sms only - will be data later in the year

And if it is anything like the current service provided since this change has happened locally (majority of calls made from our work Orange mobiles to other Orange mobiles fail to get through and just end up with a missed call text) since they set up this new "local-roaming" system then I woudn't hold my breathe. It was better before!!!

At least Vodafone can resolve their issues, perhaps I know where to spend our mobile budget in future...

I'm with Orange and have found the service vastly improved since they joined up with T-Mobile. I suppose it depends on where you live. I'm in a rural area with variable coverage by all networks.

Same here, as the Orange network sometimes used to fail here, leaving no coverage at all.

At least now if Orange coverage fails, I can use T-Mobile.

Same problem here which is rural area and intermitant coverage - which I understand - but since the switchover even with full signal (and any of our Orange phones next to each other) you can ring another one and it will just be engaged (even though they may have call waiting enabled) - and then a text will come through. Dial back and the phone that just called you will be engaged and so on

Network conjestion to say the least

And Orange just don't want to know about out

I've never had the problem you describe. I'm very happy with Orange. The connection's far more reliable than Vodafone was.

But we're drifting far off topic!
