Listen, it means you can go through it if you are unable to stop safely. But not if a member of the constabulary is sitting waiting nearby with an urgent need to get his conviction rate up. Twisted Evil

Highway Code 2007 edition: "If the amber light appears you may go on only if you have already crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to stop might cause a collision."

Which ties in with my driving instructor 40 years or so ago, saying it means stop unless it is unsafe to do so.

Probably because it does mean Stop (with caveats)

I know WHAT I had wrong. Not WHY three separate independent instructors all taught me the same wrong thing.

Sounds like they all had the same training - well I suppose they would! What interests me is would any photographic evidence show that, for instance, another vehicle was very close behind you?

Bizzare. But then they do teach some strange things. I heard one saying that you should not use your indicator when doing a U-Turn. Shocked Evil or Very Mad

You could probably argue it it court, especially if the photo showed a car following very close behind you when you crossed the line, perhaps saying something like "this nutter was driving very agressively, right up my bumper and I was concerned that if I stopped then he would have rammed me".

However, traffic lights DO give you plenty of time to stop or safely cross the line before it goes red (unless you aren't concentrating on your driving)...

You could say you were distracted, because you'd dropped your phone...

You are not meant to do anything that 'distracts' you: tuning the radio, changing the CD, eating or drinking, smoking. Sat navs are mentioned in this context, but distracts is open to interpretation, I'd always assumed it meant programming on the move.

Interesting that you are not meant to have any snow on your vehicle that could fall off and hinder other road users.

Opportunities for fixed penalty tickets seem to be rife.

Are you referring to this hoax warning?

HC 2007 s229: "remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users." Not mandatory, but not clear what action may or may not result, if any incident occurred. So a hoax with a bit of real uncertainty?
