In fact, there is NO mechanical equipment on a car, ABS, Electronic Traction Control, or ANYTHING that is remotely useful for controlling a car on ice. (and I do come from a country that has it on our roads in Winter).
The **only** things that help are Winter Tires (softer composition allows for 'stickyness' better than regular tires) somewhat but the real control comes from tires with studs in them (banned in my province for over 20 years) or chains.
Anything else..........just hold on and pray.
Seriously, if you ski, it's the same idea..........cross a patch of ice and you do NOT want to edge, you do NOT want to move your skis. Just ride it out and face the direction you want to go.
Same if you skid on ice driving a car. Foot off the throttle and steer in the direction you want to go. Don't overreact. _________________ David

Bit of a fallacy that. Doesn't matter what internal mechanism you use to slow the wheels the car only slows by friction contact with the road, so you will skid just as well by braking with gears. In fact I suspect the opposite is true and that a modern ABS will be more effective
Not every car has ABS and even with it it's to stop the wheels locking so you can steer out of trouble, it doesn't necessarily stop you quicker.
My main point was if you are driving along a road which looks wet but you can't hear the tyres, you know you are on black ice, therefore it is better to slow down by easing off the throttle and slowing down using the gears which, providing you don't slam it into first or second from higher speeds and go down the gears one at a time, at an appropriate speed, won't cause the wheels to lock or slide plus there is more chance of stopping from a slower speed should someone else do something silly. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property
