Maybe just go with the alternate option and mount the disc to the dash top? It's actually ideally located there, higher up, closer to your line of site and when the mount is removed the disc is relatively unobtrusive?

There is another active mount coming from TomTom that has a plate with 4 screw holes attached rather than a sucker, this would stick out less but I don't know how soon this will be launched.

I have just tried the second disc flat on the dashboard. The only flat area is directly behind the steering wheel but it's low enough not to obscure my driving view. This seems much more secure so I'll live with this until a better solution comes along.
