Good point - in reverse, even though it was on my car, I found it difficult to read the small kph lettering when in Europe.

Also it is more accurate than the speedo and, being digital (my speedo isn't) is clearer to read.

Having said that, given the choice I agree distance/time info is more useful.

Actually, It would have been far easier to give the option to display 0 - 4 information windows on the four corners of the map when routing or cruising and these information windows to be fully customisable to display whichever information the user wants. I cant believe how come any of the garmin's staff havent thought about it yet...
In that way everyone would have been happy with their options.

but with garmin's latest policy, unfortunately even if they do these changes, they will only apply them to newer units, as they tend to only fix bugs with firmware upgrades, rather than adding/modifying new features. Mad

Hmm, not so sure. I remember them improving the entry of addresses on the i3 which wasn't a bug.

Problem is there are quite a few real bugs to iron out and they get priority over niceties such as custom display layouts (even though TomTom have been doing it for ages..... Wink ) Also doesn't help when they add new bugs with a firmware release (Cough! 3.10 for Nuvi 7xx series...) . Fix the old bug, install a new one....? Choices, choices...... I mean it's not like Microsoft where they can argue the hardware varies from user to user.....

I remember that, too. Although it's probably more the exception than the rule. And bearing in mind, this was more to do with the key functions of the unit. I'm not saying it was required - but it did go towards the key things the i3 did (ie accept a destination as input, and route to it).

And there I agree with you completely. I'm not going to jump on some bandwagon about vendor X's units being full of bugs that need fixing, but all the same, I'd much rather they concentrate on ensuring and improving the key functions (ie navigation - perhaps addressing the old class-of-road bugbear that's blighted Garmin's in recent years), or better / more extensive support for via points.

All that as opposed to something that would probably clash with marketing (and packaging!) photos / images of their units! ;-)

OK, I'll cut to the chase, the frills are truly the frills for me - I'm not against them, and it's not that I don't appreciate them, I'd just rather effort went into support and development of their core features, than merely a few "nice-to-haves".

Also a fair point, well made.

TomTom do do user interface and configurables very well. And they're not shy on features, either.

Neither (nor any other, that I'm aware of) make seem to be able to take that much of a moral high ground on having bug free units, though.

My old Garmin Streetpilot 2610 was very customisable as to what could be displayed on screen for both modes, when navigating and when not navigating.

It's my main gripe when I moved from it to a Nuvi 760. It's as though Garmin has cut costs a huge amount and gone from more professional and configurable units and introduced a new range of 'Garmin for the masses' type units.

And I think it's a shame, I really miss being able to configure what it displays to me and I don't like having to rely on what it thinks I want to see.

I'm one who much prefers to glance at an accurate speedo compared to the one in the dashboard. Even though the camera database is now well out of date I've left my Origin B2 in the car on speedo mode and will shortly be replacing it with a GlobalTop HG-100 HUD HUD speedo.

As others have said its certainly one of Garmins downfalls that although they have affordable map upgrades the improvement in features on old units which really can't be that difficult to achieve gets ignored. Thats why recently when a friend asked me to recommend a satnav i had to say Tomtom. They have a more customizable display without being complicated, they keep up to date with new features on old devices and their map upgrades are a reasonable price. Unless one of the other manufactures can match or better that i'm afraid when it comes to it i'll be recommending a Tomtom to people and hope it doesn't go wrong!!!
Personally i think the igo software in its various incarnations is the best, igo8 particularly as they have improved the user interface enormously over the '2006 myway' but apart from the Ipaq i have its pretty much software only at the moment.
