The compatibility of sd cards remains confusing!!

Kar. I spent a lot of time looking at card options and chose a 2GB non HC card to play safe

Andy, Thats a great chart! Wish I'd been able to find that last week - wouldve saved a lot of midnight oil Laughing Out Loud Laughing

Kar's suggestion seems to be what I'm already doing but the opposite, and has the same effect, except that instead of problems with the card, the problem is switched to the internal flash. ie, on resetting and booting from the card, the unit works ok. Power off and remove the card, the unit boots from flash. On power off again, the unit is dead unless a reset is performed.

I'm starting to think that the proper method of switching from flash to card and back is by insertion/removal of card with power on, and I've seen that recommended elsewhere, but it goes against the grain and causes me some concern. As you point out Andy, I dont want any files damaging, esp if I'm miles from home.

Out of interest does anyone know what mds mid and mms file extensions are?

Lucky you...
Often they do, but TT don't recommend it.

yes boys, the experiences as to whether SDHC cards work or not seems to vary. Some report they do, others not. As I said, I played safe and got a non-HC card and 2 GB, with a read speed that I think meets the minimum requirements.......... just to play safe.

The card operates well with no discernible difference between the card and internal flash when driving. The card is obviously accessed when driving and the map and everything else displays fine.

The problem is in swapping between one and the other - it seemingly cannot be achieved without resetting. I've never had to reset the device before and to me, having to reset to swap between memory suggests something is wrong, maybe the software, maybe hardware, maybe the procedure....

Yes, something definitely seems to have changed.
It always used to be just like PCs with a "boot order" ie
On the PC, if there was a floppy disk in the drive, try to boot from that, otherwise boot from the hard drive.

On the TT, if there was an SD card in the slot (with a good set of operating system files) it would boot from there, otherwise boot from the internal memory.

yeah, think i was expecting logic like that, but it's funny that with the unit switched on, the unit will switch memories without complaint if the card is inserted or removed. only when its powered off when the card is swapped does it complain.

as i said, i have seen advice that the card should be swapped with the power on and wonder if that is in fact the proper procedure....

not until I followed the link you posted.............. slightly higher price than I paid for mine.................. but I bet I'd still have the switch over problem. Cant believe I'm the only user with a card and flash memory..... someone must have first hand experience of swapping between flash and card?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. Yeah. To switch between internal memory and flash card requires a full reboot.

the word from elsewhere, including TomTOM customer services is that a reboot IS necessary when you swap a SD card.... don't know why, you wouldve thought that the OS would see to it, or a reset switch would be in the card slot...... maybe there is cos when you swap a card in/out, it does a reboot anyway. Power should be off according to TT.
