Battery extenders usually do not have electronics (regulators), at least that is the case with the ones we sell. It means that the total amount of power (Voltage, and most current) of the batteries in series will be fed into the PDA.
If you use 4x NiMH batteries, it is about 4.8-5.0v.
If you use 4x Alkaline, it is 6v.
6v should do the PDA (normal input of 5v) no harm as the PDA has built in protection. If it does damage the PDA becaue of inoutting 6v, it only means the PDA itself is faulty.
Disregarding the voltage difference, NiMH batteries are recommended as they work better.

It is very rare for this type of extenders to have electroincs (though a couple of resistors and/or LED may be fitted). For a regulator to work efficiently, you need to supply at least 2v more than it is supposed to regulate. To regulate to 5v, you should supply at least 7v. So 4 x AA batteries cannot do it.

I have tha PPC Techs Lil Sync USB AA Battery Adapter with VRC (voltage reduction circuit) from Expansys at £12.95. It takes 4 x AA batteries and I buy the 2 x 16 pack batteries from Toys R Us at each holiday season for £6.99 for 32 batteries. IFAIK this is by far the cheapest solution I have come across.
