Disable 920 Saftey Cameras in favour of PGPS

I still don't particularily like buying a device promoted as having all the maps installed only to find I need to buy an SD card to keep them up-to-date. Anyway, forgive my ignorance, do I need to un-install the USA map from the device first or is it clever enough to install to the sd card and remove it from the main memory at the same time?

I don't really need the US map but that is not the point is it?

So if I want all the updated ones I now need £20 + worth of 8gig sdhc as well?

Does the SD card benefit from being faster like with cameras or are the standard ones OK to put these maps on?

I'd go for £10 of 4GB sdhc. Fortunately I've got a nintendo ds with a 4gb sdhc chip, camera with 2gb and spare 512. So the ds 4gb goes into the 920, 2gb to the ds and 512 to the camera until the next computer fair!

You don't need the memory card unless you want to carry around all the maps, if you are content to save the map on the PC and install it when required for a trip you can do so.
As for speed and performance, this will very much depend upon the speed of the card purchased. - Mike

Mike, If I remove the USA map from my 920 then decide in 3 months time that I need it, will it still be available to download from tomtom? Do tomtom look at what's installed to decide what is available to update or does it decide based on the device e.g. it's a 920 so he can have western europe and USA?

Just copy the map folders from the device to the PC, when you need them copy them to the device and they will work fine, you could remove the Euro map and the existing US map, perform the upgrade and copy the new maps to the PC, it doesn't take too long to do this - Mike

Thanks, I'm just formatting chips at the moment but when they're ready I'll move the usa map to the sd chip and upgrade them seperately. It's good to have someone available that has the confidence to say what to do.

Can the new map be downloaded direct to the PC through TT Home or does it have to go onto the device first (sd card or otherwise ) ?

Also wondered how big the US map was as it would be nice to have SOME room for the odd tune or two. Would 4gig allow for this?

Haven't seen an option to download to the PC, just internal or external memory in the tomtom. The new USA map is 1.9GB according to the tomtomhome update screen.

What I've noticed is that the 920 displays icons when it's memory is being accessed. I'm downloading the europe update now and the 920 display is clear. Checking my tomtom home folder, it's downloading the files to the PC before installing them.

I won't know if the maps are left on the PC until tomorrow morning, my connection is pathetically slow tonight. I've noticed it creates a new folder for each download attempt so I've got western europe, western europe-1 and western europe-2. I've also got seperate folders & files for other stuff I've updated such as safety cameras and quickgpsfix. You never know ...
