Using IE7, WinXP; tried downloading single Category, and tried several categories...didn't matter. Tried CSV and TomTom formats; still didn't matter. The zip file was consistently corrupted. Tried two different computers to uncompress: same result -- file is corrupted. The file (POIs.zip) never seems to change its size, regardless of what settings I try on the download page, and it is always corrupt when I try to open it with WinXP. Any suggestions? |

I've just tried here on a Vista machine and it is working. What anti-virus and firewall software do you have installed? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Did you try the "Show Link" option? |

No, I didn't try "show link" , I just let it download the file. The file appears to download fine, but the is corrupted.
I took a different path and downloaded "premium" maps from my GPS manufacturer (V7), so we'll see what kinds of POIs that includes. I may come back and try this again later, though, to try out the "Accommodations" download (the restaurants are too "chain" based; I'm going to look at roadfood.com for some more unqiue types of places). Thanks, though! I'll keep checking on this website in the future. Thanks! |

Please - try the "Show Link" option. It's the thing that does tend to solve this problem. |

Agree. I should have pointed this out in my original post above but it does fix the problem for most. |

This problem just Rolls On and On, surely it should have been a priority fix by now. |

The 'fix' is the show link option. Everything works as is so long as users don't try and combine dozens of categories. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Not quite Darren, apart from the link option, the problem actually lies in the amount of entries within the category (max 22-23), and it is a thorough pain having to use Poiedit everytime you update, i still maintain it should become a priority fix |

But there should be no need to grab multiple POI groups in the numbers you suggest (22-33?).
Most users have no need to download dozens of categories in one go. I've just downloaded three wi-fi POis, each containing 1000+ POIs and it works fine?
If your requirements differ from that of the vast majority then I don't see why we should make it a priority to change the system to cater for that usage. It is after all a free service and as I said, works fine for the type of download the majority require i.e. one or two POIs groups.
To permit multiple categories to be combined and or downloaded together in the numbers you suggest would place a huge load on our servers and we simply cannot justify that. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Sorry Darren, I think your missing the point, It is not multiple categories which is the problem, it is the amount of entries within a single category.
i.e. any single category with more than 22-23 entries. |

Maybe I am misunderstanding the issue? A category is a section heading i.e. Wi-Fi Hotspot Each category can contain many sub-categories i.e. in this case, BT Openzone, T-Mobile, The Cloud etc.
I am suggesting that it is both outside the scope of our design and the intended use that you should be attempting to download multiple subcategories in those numbers or indeed an entire category and it's resulting sub-categories.
Every POI is contained within a single master database. Each time you request a POI it is compiled 'on the fly' from this master table. The intended use is that you choose one or two single POI groups, maybe even half a dozen at a push. It was never designed for users who wish to grab entire Categories and as I have said, the server load that such requests create is not something we wish to support.
Indeed the end result may be that we remove the option to 'select' an entire category and restrict individual POI group selections to sensible numbers. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi Darren good news to save you going round the houses, I think the problem may be solved (for me anyway), after not downloading any POIs for a quite a few weeks due to the frustation, I just decided to give it another try, and have just downloaded both ATMs and Shopping-Supermarkets, including all subcategories (Both Heavywieghts) and it worked perfectly (a first for me) the possible reason may be that I am using a Beta IE8, perhaps somebody else could verify this, IE8 is freely available from the MS Website, it may be the end of a saga that has been going on for nearly a couple years. |

Is there anyone for whom the normal download works, but the "show Link" option doesn't?
If not, would it save a bit of confusion if the "show link" method was just made the default way? |
