Ok will give it a swerve, I am going to buy a Garmin 196 as that seems to be the best that I can afford to buy, best price I have seen is £399 with Transair, got a friend in the USA who kindly offererd to be my surrogate purchaser but there prices are roghly the same as UK. Anybody seen it any cheaper?

You probably won't get a better price as it's a fairly specialised item - same applies to GARMIN's marine units.
Just make sure you get one with the correct basemap loaded. Buying from the USA is fine - but you may end up with the American base map - which would be of no use to you in UK. You will need the Atlantic basemap (ATL). _________________ Phil |

It was probably quite expensive 10 years ago when they were new and they are beautifully built (I used to have a GPS-V and I loved it) but they are obsolete now. I don't want to sound rude, but 20 quid is probably a fair price for this unit. If it's the pilot version then maybe 70 quid.
As philpugh says, watch out for the "basemap" on the Garmin units. Some of the newer ones have worldwide basemaps, others have a basemap which is specific to a certain area, ie: Americas or Atlantic (Europe/Middle East/Africa) or Pacific (Australasia) and quite often you can't change it.
Also, if you want to use the unit in your car (and you might as well!) then get the City Navigator Europe maps for it when you buy it and you can use it as a car sat nav too. Make sure you get the right street maps there are an "NT" and a non-NT version, check which one you need.
Good luck! ![Thumbs Up](modules/Forums/images/smiles/custom2.gif) _________________ Gone fishing! |

I still have my GPSII+. It's built to last, been dropped on more bits of rock up and down the country than I care to think about - but is still working. It's simply not worth selling it, it isn't anywhere near as sensitive as modern stuff. Show it a few trees on a summers day and it tends to go a bit blind. Saw one on ebay a few months back - it got around £18 - and that's pushing it a bit. _________________ Phil |

A difficult call. If the Lowrance is second-hand you should factor in the cost of an update to the Jeppesen database but there are for's and against's for both models. The Lowrance has an excellent screen but is bulky whereas the Garmin has approach procedures.
For VFR it would appear the 1000 was very popular but Garmin may be a more commonly deployed device. _________________ Darren Griffin |
