thanks. yes, they were cameras on a parallel road. it still made me "jump" when the warnings went off, even though i realised almost immediately they were cameras on the other road. i figure that the greater the warning distance you have set, the more false alarms you will get.
i prefer to have "warn only on route" unticked, as i wont always have a route set.

| In terms of warning distances, I tend to have my distances for mobile cameras (especially the lower-speed ones - 20, 30, 40) set much higher than the distances for Gatso cameras. A Gatso isn't going to get you until you actually drive past it, so no need for such a high warning distance ; but a mugger in a van, pointing his radar hairdryer up the road towards you, can zap you almost as soon as you round a bend and see him in the distance. I prefer to know as far in advance as possible whether I'm going to come around a corner or over the brow of a hill and see one of Chief Constable Brunstrom's "finest" sitting in a layby 600 yards down the road (it happens!). |

I couldn't agree with you more. For the mobile sites I have set them at 1000 yards for the 30/40/50's and 1400 yards for the 60/70 speed limits.
Those handheld devices have a fair range on them. |

Indeed. Over a kilometer, if the visibility is there. You are very wise to set your warnings at longer distances from these. In most cases, if you are speeding and you see the van, you have already been zapped.

999tommo......I set mine for the maximum on handheld/mobile sites....I too know a bit about them.....So 1000yds for a 60/70mph location (IE Motorway Bridges etc) isn't a bad setting.

I find a good way of setting the distance for mobiles on motorways, is to look at your Tom Tom (when it is safe to do so) and monitor whether or not you can see the icon on the map, before you hear the warning. If you do, I would increase the distance of warning. 1000 yards is probably about right.
