I just gave it a try. Got in OK, downloaded Argos OK.
I right clicked the files and chose a folder into which to move, it beeped and muttered about corrupt or invalid and started hanging up and generally being unhappy - I had to stop it with Task Manager. However, it DID move them into the folder I chose. I don't understand all this new technology anyway 8O

Hi there, I'm new to Pocket GPS World.

Are the problem reported here the reason why when I download a GARMIN format POI, I get a ZIP file with OV2 files in. I thought that the Garmin required CSV's.

Am I just being silly?

Corrupt downloads is a regulat reported problem but as of yet nobody appears to want to acknowledge it, I still cannot understand why every download has the same file name irrespective of category, the mind boggles (more than usual)

As YOU decide what categories you want in the download and whether to have them seperate or combined, the download has to be compiled for you on the fly. I assume that is why the archive is always called "POIs.zip".

But what is the problem with that?
If you want to download several categories at once, they will all unzip into files with their correct individual names.

For example:
1. If I want just Abbey bank, I tick "Abbey" in the banks section and the downloaded "POIs.zip" contains a file called "Abbey.ov2"

2. If I want Abbey and Barclays as seperate files, I tick both of them and select "Separate files per subcategory". Now the downloaded "POIs.zip" contains TWO files "Abbey.ov2" and "Barclays.ov2"

3. If I want Abbey and Barclays combined in one POI category, I tick both and select "Combine subcategories into category file". This time the downloaded "POIs.zip" contains one file called "banks.ov2", which has both Abbey and Barclays branches merged.

Very clever, I think!

Finally, if you want to do several downloads one after the other, when your browser prompts you where to save each file, just rename them to "POIs2.zip", "POIs3.zip" before you hit "save".

All very well for the way you use them, But due to the developing nature of the database I usually spread my downloads over a week or more and also download seperate main categorys consequently every time i downoad I have to inzip into a subfolder pending uoloading to PDA, incendently my files all download as 18040_POIs.zip because I also use"show link" it is the only way I seem to get less corrupt downloads which still seem to be a problem, I would have thought it would have been an easy task to download as iether main category titles for multiple files and subcategory titles for single titles thus overwriting existing files as more POIs are added or is this too simple

I still don't see why you can't just rename it to whatever you want when you download it?
Even if you use the "Show link" method, just right click and select "Save link as..." (Firefox) or "Save as..." (I.E.).

I've never had a corrupt download, and I've been playing with the POIs a lot over the last week or two.

I'm sure if it was easy they would have done it that way. You'll have to get the site admin to answer that one; if they haven't been put off by being told how simple it all is really.

I then have to search and look to see what i previously saved it as, why not keep it simple.

Lucky you, you obviously are not reading the posts their are various postings with problems downloading corrupt files including two in this very posting.

Again you should read the posts, This Paragraph actually starts "I would have thought" It echos my thoughts, not somebody being told,

but also bear in mind that this is a forum for anybody to discuss or suggest any points however you would wish to interpret them.
But overall on the subject the old initials K.I.S.S springs to mind

Andy as a postcript I do respect the hard work that the Admin put into this site and particularly in the POIs and speed cameras databases and have commented on this in previous posts, and I am sure that that they also welcome constructive comments to enable them to make these the best databases which can only come from comments from the endusers, I am also a regular user having recently submitted a poi file containing 207 locations with phone numbers(it wasnt done in a couple of hours) I also regularly update add and reposition existing locations as i find them, their is still a lot out of positition but hopefully people will rectify them as time goes on bearing in mind it is still relatively young.

I have failed this week to access the POI database.
I tried the suggestion for IE7.

OK, I'm back...toys back in pram....
Tell me which sub-categories you want in it and I'll download it for you. Send me your address (via PM) and I'll email it to you.

Or, alternatively, you could take your individual ones and merge them with POI Edit.

Correct me if I am wrong but we do state that in the very download page.

Use the Garmin format if you need to have the combined shopping category, and then use MakeOV2 to pack it up for TomTom. There seems to be some kind of memory limitation but we haven't found it yet. It only occurs when doing the MakeOV2 emulation.
