I ordered mine on the 27th of December & it hasnt turned up yet.

In the email reply from Garmin did you spot this line?

"Your Disk should arrive within 7 - 10 business days via First Class Mail as soon as it is available and ships"

Maybe it isnt ready just yet or they may have a run on them.

They stated the DVD was ready fron 12th December. Maybe they have to be shipped from US and the 7 - 10 days applied to the US market.

I rang Garmin the week before Xmas and got the disc the next day. Hows that for service!!!!!!
This problem with POI's is well documented on the Home page of this site. As well as the solution. All I can say is that the method I discribed works.

I know there is a well-documented problem with loading a large number of POI categories, but I've only ever loaded the pgpsw speed cameras and MaFt's POIs, and I've never had a problem.

You seemed to be inferring that the POIs were causing a problem with loading the maps, which was why I asked

Did the unit actually lock up while you were loading the maps or while you were loading custom POIs? Or did you use the card-reader method for loading the maps rather than loading them straight onto the unit as a precaution because of your experience with loading POIs?

Yes my I3 locked up loading just the new maps. Tried it a number of times only way I could get the v9 maps on was with a card reader.

Thanks for clarifying that, harley-noj.

Has anybody else had the problem of already having v9 preloaded when you bought your unit and being notified that your maps are out of date?

I emailed Garmin about harley-noj's i3 locking up when loading V9 maps, and also asked whether European mapping could be loaded onto the i3. Here's the reply:

Quote:
Hello Anita,

The i3 shouldn't lock up during a map update unless the download has been disrupted in some way. This can be easily fixed with a master reset (this will erase recent selections, favourites and the go home but will not erase any POI's or maps) to perform a master reset please try the following:

Switch unit off, press and hold arrow key + wheel + on button all simulateously for 5 seconds, select yes to erase all user data and follow the start up sequence.

I would thoroughly recommend leaving the unit outside in a car after performing a master reset to get a really strong satelite fix for 45 minutes to an hour (obviously keeping an eye on it as it's outside) in addition once that is complete perform a software update through WebUpdater on this link

The maps should be transferable straight to the i3 and one thing to check to make sure all connections are okay in the following Start, control panel, system, hardware, device manager - check here the i3/garmin is listed if not there may be a malfuntion with the usb port in which case we would be happy to have the unit in for repair if the unit is listed and has a !/? next to it suggest a malfuction with the usb lead.

If all appears okay I would recommend downloading the drivers again using this link

Next the unit should be fine to transfer maps across now, the i3 can hold on its internal memory or micro sd card an update for the UK and Ireland maps, if more is required for example, some European mapping you may need a larger card and the i3 is compatible with up to a 1GB micro sd card.

You can use a different card as long as it is a micro sd card, it's self explanatry but one thing I wouldn't recommend is putting any cards with maps on to a non Garmin device as all the maps will be erased. Version 9 has been incredibly popular so there is a backlog in requests but we have received more last friday and they will be shipped as soon as possible.

On the version 9 DVD disk will be UK, Ireland, Eastern and Western European countries, which i3 users can transfer to their units depending on how much is being transfered.

I hope that explains everything! Once again if you feel you have any further questions please do not hesitate to conact me.

Kind Regards,

Rebecca Turpin

Thanks for that Anita. Very helpful and reassuring. Can't wait to get my hands on the DVD and I think that I'd go for the 1GB micro SD as suggested and get the whole lot onto the tiny i3. Laughing

Anyone got any advice on a good size for a card....I've got my existing v8 maps on the internal memory - so will reinstall when the DVD comes...I don't need all of Europe...just really France, maybe some other bits and pieces in the future....best to go for 1GB for maximum coverage? or will smaller be sufficient...any thoughts?

And thanks Anita - your post was really helpful...even if the ancestory of the tech support is questionable!

The problem I had downloading the maps was not due to connection. It was as follows
Downloading all of v9 UK fail numerous time always around 34%
Removed Ireland fails now at 76%
Remove Scotland and Ireland downloads Ok
Use a card reader no problem, the CR was pluged into the same usb port.
Will let Garmin know the problem I had and will post answer.
Hope this helps someone.

Just had an interesting talk with Garmin. The outcome is that they have no idea what is going on when I'm downloading the maps (V9). He is going to pass the problem on to see if others are also reporting it.
But If anybody is updating to V9 I would use a card reader.

I would strongly suggest using a card reader, i had the same sort of problems with a navmans internal memory, it may be a 1.1 usb port, may be goes to standby after 15mins, just an ideas.
