How do I avoid part of a route?

I haven't tried this...but...

Set an itinerary for the route that you want to avoid using the motorway junction PoI's as waypoints. This should split the M25 (say) into convenient lengths. Then choose avoid.

Last time I tried you could do the "avoid" routine more than once and stack up a series of bits to avoid. Can you still avoid more than one section?
