You seem a bit confused. On one hand you take your device out of your lorry because you realise that it will probably get stolen. You are therefore concerned about theft.

On the other hand, you think that if people offer something for sale and you are unlucky enough to buy it then that's tough.

It is unfair to be concerned about crime only when it involves you and not give a stuff about others.

Your confusing me now. I'm saying a Free Confidentail site might be more used because of the user feeling more comfortable. If you find the device is stolen then ovouisly it's up to the user to decide what action to take about this. It has been said many times on the site not to leave expensive satnav systems visable when leaving your vehicle, it applies to lots of things. I'm not saying it's fair that someone might come along and smash your window to retrive it, i'm just saying that removing or hiding the device is the best measure in todays climate.

What's unfair about that.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with crime prevention. Crime solving is equally as important. Any 'law abiding' person will know the source of anything he/she buys and should therefore not need to check if it is stolen. You say you bought your TT from your friend so if you trust your friend, why would you need to check if it is stolen ? Anyway the point I was concerned about was that you felt that the thought of Police making enquiries with you about something you had bought which turned out to be stolen, appears to be some form of hassle or inconvenience. I just can't understand why someone would feel inconvenienced by the Police trying to solve a crime. Particularly when you are obviously concerned enough about crime to take your device out of your lorry to avoid being a victim yourself.

I'm not saying I need to check my perticalar device, i'm saying there are always devices being sold be it ebay etc and sometimes they come without a product key or sometimes they come complete ovoiusly if they come complete there is less chance of it be stolen but thats not to say it definatly is not. I'm talking in general not about my device. Anyway as I said everyone has different views on whether they feel the confidentailality of a site is inportant or not i'm just saying one point of view. Anyway i've made it, others of made there own and that's the point of a forum.

OK. I accept we are all different. I didn't want a fight anyway !! I just think we should all work together, whether it be assisting each other with advice like on this site, or helping to prevent and solve crime.

I accept your view on the subject and will agree to disagree.

I agree that people should not feel hassled or unduly inconvenienced by helping with a Police investigation. On the other hand, I can see that possibly having to appear as a witness in court, particularly when dealing with some of the more unpleasant lowlifes, could deter some from their civic responsibilities.

I certainly can't disagree with that. I don't particularly like giving evidence in cases involving the lowest of the low, but I have no choice, so I can understand people not wanting to 'lend a hand' in those circumstances, although there are ways of preventing disclosure of personal details if there is a perceived risk to the witness.

In the main though, people who smash car windows for Sat Navs are not hard core criminals. They are opportunist thieves who take advantage of other peoples stupidity (by that I mean carelessness with security). These are not the kind of person that Joe Public should have any concerns with being a witness against.
