Just to clarify some erroneous points made in this thread. Ulster contains nine counties. Six of these are part of the UK and the remaining three are part of Ireland. E.G., Donegal belongs to Ulster and is part of Ireland - not the UK.
Also, it's interesting that the overwhelming majority of people who refer to Ireland as Eire are people from the UK. Irish people (from the Republic of Ireland) refer to 'Ireland' when discussing the Republic of Ireland and 'Northern Ireland' when discussing the six counties belonging to the UK.
The roads in Ireland outside of Dublin and those linking major towns like Cork to Dublin have improved enormously over the last ten years - mostly due to European funding. The rural roads in Kerry, Galway, etc are still a disgrace.
I hope that clears things up. By the way, I live in Ireland.
Regards,
Clifford. |

When I was at school in Norn Iron it consisted of 6 counties the other 26 were in the free state, so when was Ulster increased to 9 counties??

Sorry if I caused offence, none was intended - I have close connections with Ireland and I travel there a lot. Hey, I'm from New Zealand, you should see the state of some of the roads there!

Sorry, pressed the button too quick!! Good job I don't work in missle silo.
Having lived on both the North and South Islands of New Zealand, I think the roads in New Zealand are pretty good bearing in mind how little revenue is collected to maintain them, unlike the UK where billions are raised and wasted on other ill thought out ideas and general pocket lining of the establishment. |

Apparently "Northern Ireland" is not the same as "Ulster"!
It came as a shock to me - up until now I always thought Ulster was the 6 counties of Northern Ireland but it isn't.
Ulster actually includes Cavan, Donegal, and Monaghan which are part of the Republic of Ireland. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Well blow me down, (I`m being polite here) I stand corrected, by a Kiwi of all people. I honestly never knew that, but I have checked and Skippy is correct, and me an Ulsterman.

I presume you are a Northern Ireland Ulsterman not the Republic of Ireland Ulsterman then..
I can't take credit for this geography lesson - I was as confused as you were!
It was cliffordnolan who mentioned it and got me wondering. We learn something new every day mate!
