I'd be very wary, I'm on O2 and get charged for GPRS. As has been said over at XDA-Dev, if they choose to backdate your usage and bill you they can unless you have the 'Free GPRS' in writing. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Point taken, but until it happens (and my contract states that charges can be back dated by 90 days) - due to international network sharing, after that period I would challenge their bill - not quite at 90 days yet but the gprs "traffic" was listed on my previous two bills with a zero charge applied (and was certainly over the 100kb limit imposed, unless that it averaged out over the month) so I fail to see how they can retrospectively charge fore traffic already shown as free / no charge on there own documentation - in my opinion they had the chance to charge when the traffic was on the bill - if they chose not to then it would be difficult to demand payment later -
tip keep you bills for at least six months if in this position
What O2 contract are you using when incurring charges?

I'm not entirely sure, it's paid by my company, I'll find out. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Darren, (and for the benefit of others I contacted O2 via e-mail, now I am back I can post part of there response with respect to "free GPRS"
"Having done some digging on this subject (as we don't deal with
billing) I believe there was a technical problem with the billing system
for new customers, whereby GPRS was not being charged for. This has now been rectified, and from June / July, the bills should reflect these
changes and show the GPRS being charged for, which will include GPRS Wap and Web usage."
So it looks like I can expect a charge, I still don't know if the free bit you get (100KB per day) is averaged out over the month in question, or you get charged for every bit over it? will post reply when I get one.
Also of interest was O2 response with respect to the "active" interface they ship with the XDA units - not relevant for this topic but will post post elsewhere when I get chance - Mike |

I was way out on the 100KB per day, its 100KB per month!!! - just got the reply from O2
"Hi Mike,
The 100KB is per month rather than per day. I believe it does not roll
over to the following month."
Looks like I won't be using that unless really needed - the option to purchase additional is there but that costs a fortune so I will have to stay chained to the desktop / laptop and only use the XDA for internet in the pub - Mike |

Darren, having received yet another cost summary from O2 I phoned their help desk (35 min to answer), the view they have is that its free, and if not charged for by months end you will not be charged in the future, I know I have busted the "free" limit by some considerable margin while away in the Dales and on a number of business trips (I expected a charge in excess on £15 for the GPRS traffic as I have been monitoring it) - anyone else experiancing the same thing when using O2 GPRS on a contracted connection??? - Mike |

I already have (via e-mail) so time will tell - I can't get my mind around the charges though - if they sell bolt ons for GPRS and then don't charge a user for the GPRS traffic why bother? - I agree you don't get anything for nothing these days but every query I have made on this topic so far has been negative in terms of a cost to myself - pretty bizzare or what? _ mike,
Has anyone else noticed similar??? I can't be the only one in this position bear in mind this is personal contract and not a business use phone, even though I am using "corporate" mode on the handset. |
