It says there's Smartphone Connected which relies on you have a data contract or Always Connected which the footnote just says needs network availability which would suggest an in-device SIM.

The PocketGPSWorld tweets yesterday say the 00 series use your phone, and the 000 have built in GPRS. Overall a good idea. I just hope it allows pairing to multiple devices, so that husband and wife can use the same device without having to do anything special.
That said, won't this need tethering? Most contracts don't have tethering. Hmm. Not sure I like it now. |

IT also says "Mobile apps and in-car solutions will be getting the refreshed interface" which will be interesting, not least because I'm totally unimpressed with the Android app in it's current form _________________ Galaxy Note 4 / TomTom GO : CamerAlert : CoPilot |

To clarify:
400 - 4.5 inch screen
500 - 5 inch screen
600 - 6 inch screen
the above 3 require a smartphone connection. Basically it uses Bluteooth tethering so you would need to make sure that your tariff allows for tethering.
The 6000 (6 inch) has a SIM card but, still, this is GPRS only.

Having watched the launch, it looks very good. I'm tempted. I would want to know what I'm going to lose compared to the 740 I have though - I use itineraries and POI for example. And the tethering issue will be an interesting one - I am on a very cheap £7.50/month tariff at the moment on my iPhone, and tethering isn't an option without paying a heck of a lot more.
But they have obviously taken the modern ARM hardware and done a good job of making it into something better. Positive stuff. |

There are no itineraries as such on the new devices but they do allow multiple waypoints.
There's also no 3rd party POI support.
Personally I think they would have been better off using WiFi for the data so it could be used with MiFi devices in the car too.
They are nice and the new software makes a massive difference too. I'm just uploading a video demo to YouTube...

I read it to mean that there are two versions, one needs a smart phone connection, the other is 'Always connected' via a built-in sim?
Also looks like the end of the UK&RoI map as the europe map will become the standard issue for us europeans.
Edit: will the device itself be more compatible with MyTomtom I wonder?
Edit2: it does look rather pretty. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Having watched the whole presentation the actual new models look good but the presentation itself was dire!
Anyway, when and how much?
Without seeing the details I'd be reluctant to download via my phone, it's too much of a dependency on having the phone, enabling bluetooth, etc, etc. I'd much prefer a stand alone unit. Just plug it in and the data downloads. No doubt this will have a price premium. |

The models will be an interesting one regarding traffic. They would be wise to ensure that the 6000 model, with integration, is also able to use your phone if you don't pay for the GPRS to work. It seems that I have tethering on my Orange account, but will pay £1 per day for use. The data will be small, so not significant. This then has to be compared with the extra cost of the device, and the service for it, versus the number of days I would be using it. For important days, that wouldn't be often, but for casual days, where traffic is "just nice", which is what they are aiming to expand, that becomes a real cost. Used daily that would be £200 for me! Used just on important trips, perhaps £20.
Given tethering isn't enabled on many plans, I think this is going to be the most interesting gamble they've made. WiFi support would have been a useful alternative - a MiFi can be shared across more devices, and tends to have lower overall costs. But no bluetooth... |
