The results of a mobile speed camera pilot scheme in North Yorkshire have led to the planned installation of three more cameras.

According to the North Yorkshire Police, speeding was responsible for almost a quarter (24%) of all road deaths in the county over the three years to 2010.

The figures, combined with the area's popularity with bikers, prompted the force to introduce a mobile safety camera pilot in June 2011.

During the mobile safety van's first year of use, the number of fatal crashes caused by speeding fell from 14 to 7.

The force added that the pilot scheme has caught 26,000 speeding motorists, including a motorcyclist who was travelling at 144mph.

The pilot scheme has prompted three new mobile cameras to be installed today (Friday 12 April).

Assistant Chief Constable Iain Spittal said: "The results from the pilot scheme fully justify the expansion of our mobile safety camera capability. We have witnessed some extreme offences brought before the courts, supported by indisputable evidence captured by the high-tech equipment used in the safety camera van."

North Yorkshire is not the only county to announce plans to tackle hasty drivers, with new speed cameras due to touch down in Essex by 2015 in a £1mn project.

It is hoped the introduction of average speed cameras on the A12 near Kelvedon in Essex will bring down the accident rate and reduce delays. Work starts later this year.
