Garmin updates

I have an old Gramin street pilot c15 last updated some years ago before I bought a Nuvi 660. I dont use sat nav much but when I went to look at updating the 660 recently I couldn't because garmin have altered the map format in some way?. I had been considering purchasing a lifetime update package a little while ago but am now glad I didn't. My questions are, Can I get updates for the 660 and the c15 from anywhere else? What do manufacturers mean by lifetime updates? How long in years does this mean? As I now have two sat navs in perfect working order that I can't use proerly because I can't get updates.
Any suggestions for makers who are prepared to offer updates for sat navs on a marriage basis (i.e 'As long as ye both shall live') will be most welcome

Seems odd you're not able to update the maps on the Nuvi.

I just looked on the Garmin webpage for "Buy maps" HERE, and when I put in "Nuvi660" I got offered several maps, so they do seem available.

There's also a link for "Update maps" HERE, but I couldn't check what that one offers, because you need to enter your device serial number

If you've registered your devices log into myGarmin and select myMaps ... you'll be told what is/is not possible. The nuvi 660 can be updated, not sure about the Street Pilot though
