Hello, new on this forum and looking for serious in-car GPS
I have an iPAQ 3970 and am tempted by product like Navman, Tom Tom or by a dedicated and transferable GPS.
I am not sure I want a PDA-based unit as my wife does not have a PPC but a Palm Tungsten T.
I have used Palm and Pocket PC and am not convinced a PDA can handle a GPS application quickly and safely enough.
On the other hand, dedicated units like Garmin 2620 or Magellan 700 cost around £1000.
I travel in:
- UK: M25 area mostly, North England regularly
- France and Switzerland: Regularly
It has to be a transferable unit as my car lease ends in July 2005.

The Pocket PC based systems do work, despite your doubts, so long as you don't use a faulty storage cards for your maps.
My system is based around an iPAQ 3970 running the 4.00.08 Pocket PC 2003 ROM. I'm using TomTom Navigator 3 with TomTom Traffic, GPS Assist 2.1, and Spb's GPRS Monitor running in the background, and it works just fine. The mobile phone link is Bluetooth (to a Nokia 6310i on Vodafone), and I'm using a CompactFlash GPS in a suitable expansion pack.
The forums will give you a false impression, in that there'll be plenty of posts there from people seeking help who have problems with their setups. What you don't see are lots of posts from people whose systems are working just fine.
There is no way the companies selling the (not exactly cheap) navigation software for PDAs would survive if people were not happy with their purchases. For sure, none of the systems are perfect and all have their faults, but they are still very good.
