|
|
the MaFt-mobile ('97 fiesta) is finally costing more to repair than it's worth (massive oil leak [was booked in to garage early next week] then yesterday the clutch went, the blowers don't work properly, the heating is either all on or all off, the paintwork's a mess, the tax is due at the end of the month and generally it's a bit rubbish!!) . so, anyway, a garage i know have a 2000 (W) 1.6 rover 25 for £600 with 69k, new head gasket and radiator fitted a few weeks ago (it was one of their customers who didn't want to pay for the repair so sold it to garage for him to fix and sell).
so, my question is, are they any good? it's seems pretty cheap compared to similar cars on auto-trader but i know the guy selling it so know there's nothing dodgy with it. with rover going bust does it affect ease of getting parts or are there a tonne of generic chinese parts anyway?
any advice welcome!

Get a test drive, make sure the clutch is OK. If all seems OK then ask for a 30 day warranty, take cash with you and offer £450. Let him see the money, then see if he will meet you halfway. Do check the VIN number(s) and make sure it has not been rebuilt from an accident.
Just some things to look out for. |

it'a already been reduced from 700 to 600 (mates rates, also seen it advertised at 700)
it's essentially a private sale but it currently has no tax so not sure if a test drive would be legal as they have no dealer plates to put on!! . equivalent cars on auto-trader are around £900 so i don't think he's ripping anyone off.

Well just make sure it would pass the mot test. As regards the mechanical reliability you can only take a chance. If he's a good mate then you will have to make that decision, will he still be your mate if it need some expensive repair a month down the road. |

My son bought one a year old with 6000 miles on the clock, he kept it for three years and sold it with 111000 miles showing. Two years further down the line and the buyer has had no problems, added 12000 miles.
My son had to buy a new battery just before he sold it.
The only problem he had was the 'cat' broke away from the exhaust, which would have been expensive, but got one from a breakers yard and saved quite a few pounds. It's a bit fiddly to replace yourself but can be done.
If you do buy one MaFt be aware the fuel cut off is a bit sensitive, if you hit a pothole or kerb a bit hard it triggers and you'll find the car hard to start and if it does it runs like a 'pig'. If it happens look for a small dome shaped rubber 'thingy' just in front of the bulkhead towards the left hand side, looking from the front. A quick push down resets it. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Surely PGPSW can do better than that for a company car MaFt. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |

I've had Fords since 1982 - 4 Fiestas and currently have a 1.8 diesel Escort that I bought off Ebay exactly 5 years ago for £600. I've spent very little on it and get 60mpg. I was recently looking for one for someone else and this one sold for £389 - it's a '98 diesel with 87k miles but that engine can easily do 250k miles so is just run-in.
Spares for Fords are cheap and readily available.
