Used the SatMap for the first time today on a full days walk,we never put a foot wrong all day which is remarkable for us as we usually manage to get transiently disorientated ( ie lost ) at least once during a walk. The mapping really puts the Garmin Topo in its place.
Had one problem as the "Distance To Next Waypoint" and "Bearing To Next Waypoint" never altered at all so consequently the pointer didn't move either.Gave SatMap a call from the middle of Baildon Moor spoke to a knowledgable chap, told me the compass wanted calibrating, did same and rebooted, all working again.
Superb service.
Li-Pol battery performance excellent, it is still showing three blocks ( and has done for the last three hours ) and is still working nine hours after switching on ( trail-up,screen off after 15 secs for the first four hours then on continuously,80% brightness).

Congratulations on the first Satmap walk (many happy returns)!
I find the orientation is much more reliable if I calibrate the compass for each trip - it is quick and easy.
I just got the LiPol and I am very pleased. It has been on all day (12 hours) with the screen at 50% brightness and continuously illuminated. This has included route planning, walking and driving use.

Yes you are quite correct I shall have to remember to calibrate the compass before each trip.
As an aside what does calibrating the compass actually do ?
I seem to recall that the Garmin 60CS has to be calibrated after each battery change and I read somewhere that this compensated for the slightly different idiosyncracies of the different battery sets affecting the GPS signal ( ? true or not ).
As the SatMap with the Li-Pol keeps the same battery then obviously this is not the case with this unit.

I am assuming that the calibration will allow the unit's in-built compass to measure magnetic north coming from all directions (twice) and compensate for any idiosyncrasies in the sensor.
I don't know how the Satmap one works but it is possibly by sensing a magnetic force vector as charge on a cluster of peizoelectric devices or a solidstate device like this one http://www.arrickrobotics.com/arobot/compass.html http://www.dinsmoresensors.com/ |

I'm not sure how re-calibrating the in-built compass affects distance and bearing to next waypoint as these are 'simple' calculations based on your current position as given by the GPS fix.
I bet the fix involved you turning it off and on! _________________ Phil |

I have previously criticised Satmap for their email response, but must now take it back.
Today I sent an email query, received a request for clarification two hours later, sent clarification at 16:35 and received a complete reply to my query by 16:40.

Perhaps it is true that SatMap read this forum and have decided to get it together it bit more on the comms side.
If 1.3 comes out tomorrow and the Route Planner before the end of the month I will be a happy chap.
