I left Bourton on the Water yesterday afternoon and set my 520 to take me home to Poynton, Cheshire, by the fastest route
I was a little surprised when it directed me across country to the M40 rather than across to the M5 but they usually know what they are doing and so I went with it. The traffic was horrendous and I decided that the toll road was way to go and I went that way. As I approached T4 the 520 directed me off the toll road and that seemed insane, so I ignored it. As we passed the junction it recalculated and the mileage remaining went from 74 up to 83. At T6, the same thing happened and again I ignored it and this time it added a couple of miles. I decided I was going to just stay on the toll road and as we left it and rejoined the M6, it recalculated and the remaining miles suddenly plummetted from 77 (ish) to 54. A couple of miles further on it again recalculated and the mileage remaining went up again from 52 to 63! After that it behaved itself and took us home.
Has anyone had this happen before?
Additionally, sometimes when I take a phone call It goes in a loop and repeats a syllable of a word ad nauseum until you reboot it. Has anyone else had this phenomenon?
Yes, when I selected an alternative route, it asked me if I wanted to allow toll roads and I did. My main concern is the constant recalculating with obviously incorrect distances

It's faulty. I've had this with the 720 (more than one). Take it back for a replacement or refund. Do NOT accept the old wives tale that it can be corrected by an update. I've got a recording of it on my Nokia phone and at full volume it's mind blowing.
I too find the routing "different" at times. This model/application software is not as willing to turn round, but is also not as willing to go the route you'd perhaps expect!
I've just done that route on my 720 and it calculated across to Tewkesbury and up M5 etc as you expected. I have App 7.221 and map v710.1561. Maybe you're different?
The recalculations with higher mileage on Toll M6 would probably be caused by it struggling to take you back to the route it had established - I expect it wanted you to U-turn at the next junction and go back to get back on track.
These differences in route choices have been discussed quite a bit. They are caused by the map detail picked up by the TT device. Presumably your route up to M40 was calculated as quicker because it had enough 60mph stretches to beat the cross country route to Tewkesbury.
Autoroute Express has the Tewkesbury route at 133.7 miles, 2 hours 33 mins, with the first almost 30 miles across country on unclassified and B roads. Via A429, M40, M42, M6 it shows 137.7 miles, 2 hours 41 mins. It never considers M6 Toll, which is further.
Remember for future that if you think the calculated route is odd, you can get it to recalculate an alternative and/or tell it to avoid some part of the route or Travel Via, which would force it to take the route you prefer. _________________ Dennis

I initially had this problem with my GO 720 and Nokia 6120 Classic but, after updating the GO to Navcore 7.221 via TomTom Home, I have not had the error occur again so don't know whether I have just been lucky or the update has actually solved this problem!
