I am thinking about buying the Navman 4400 to use as a car based navigation system with my Palm. Is there a marine navigation application which I could load on a separate SD card so that I could use the same hardware in my boat and just switch cards?
thx.

The Navman 4400 software (SmartST Pro) will only work on a Pocket PC, so you won't be able to use this on the Palm. You could use the GPS Receiver though against a Bluetooth enabled Palm. |

Thanks Dave - perhaps the Review for the 4400 could be revised to qualify the statement that the 4400 will work with "any PDA" and the systems supported legend on the page showing the various bluetooth reviews also indicates that the Palm OS is supported? I guess you just meant that the unit as a reciever will work with a Bluetooth enabled Palm, but to a newbie like me, it did give me the wrong idea.
Leaving that issue aside, any thoughts on the question re Palm compatible Marine charts applications?
regards,

Justin, this will all become apparent in the very near future but in the mean time we will put a footnote on the review and the menu page saying that it's only the hardware that's compatible. |

Justin,
If you want to use the 4400 with Marine charts then depending on the area you want coverage for there are a number of options.
If you ae looking at sailing in the UK then you could buy the Maptech Marine chart software and the Memory-Map pocket navigator. This will allow you to have detailed Nautical Charts for the areas you want to sail in.
If you are looking to sail in the USA then you can still use the same setup as above, with USA costal charts, or You could use the New Maptech Outdoor Navigator (reviewed here) or there is also Fugawi Software which can accept marine charts. _________________ Mike Barrett |
