iGolf Technologies has just announced it is taking pre-orders for an SD GPS receiver that it will bundle with its iGolfgps v.2 application for golfers and Mapopolis Platinum Plus, a general-purpose GPS navigation application.
The SD GPS receiver will be compatible with Palm OS and Pocket PC devices, and iGolf will include versions of both applications for these two platforms. Though the company says the device will be usable with any handheld with SDIO, the reality is frequently somewhat more complicated, with many different drivers being required for various models.
Customers are required to put down $150 in order to reserve one of these from iGolf, with the final cost being $300. The company says this SD GPS receiver will begin shipping in the first week of November.
According to iGolf, it has a suggested retail price of $350. It's likely that other companies will begin offering this device in the near future, though, of course, not all will be bundled with golf software.
While this will be the first SDIO GPS receiver, there are several already available for Pocket PCs that use the CompactFlash slot.
Made by Matsush*ta?
In May, word surfaced that Matsush*ta is going to release a GPS receiver that connects to a handheld through the SD slot. It appears that the SD GPS receiver being offered by iGolf is the one Matsush*ta announced last spring. Matsush*ta is the only company known to be working on one of these and the pictures released by iGolf strongly resemble the one of Matsush*ta's device. However, iGolf is unable to say who makes this product, due to non-disclosure agreements
If this is the Matsush*ta model, then it will be part of BSQUARE's SDIO Now! program, which seeks to simplify the process of making peripherals compatible with Pocket PCs. The announcement from iGolf is the first word that this receiver will be compatible with Palm OS devices, too.
