|

Hi,
I'm using a Tom Tom wired GPS with an O2 XDAII, I've had it now for about 6 months & it was working fine but just recently when I've had to use it in the mornings I don't get any GPS signal until 30mins into the journey & then I only get 3 or 4 GPS Sat's, compare this to the afternoon, I can turn Tom Tom on & get a fix in about 5 secs & then I have between 7-9 GPS Sat's.
I also leave the unit plugged into the cigarette lighter so that I know it is charged & ready but for the life of me I can't figure it out.
Anybody else had the same experience or know why this is happening??
Cheers. |

Which version of TomTom are you using? Version 3 or version 5. _________________ Graham.

Do you listen to a different radio station in the AM/PM? _________________ Darren Griffin |

I am pretty sure I know what is happening, up until recently I was using a Leadtek 9532 receiver which is basically what the TomTom receiver is, when I used to use TomTom 3 I ran my receiver in Sirf 4800 and never had any problems with it, after I upgraded to TomTom 5 I had to reset my Leadtek back to NMEA 4800. I noticed straight away that the ttff was much longer than before and regulary on the morning journey the signal would keep dropping out all together. Coming home in the afternoon was generally not a problem.
For what ever the reason the Leadtek/TomTom receiver's appear to hold on to the signal much better running in Sirf, Unfortunately due to TomTom 5's lack of support for gps receivers running them only using Nmea is the only option.
As my wife generally only uses her pda past midday I swapped my old wired receiver for her shiny new Globalsat 338 teehee. Which is amazing, she is also happier now as she couldn't quite understand this blutooth pairing thingy!!! :D
Everyone is a winner in my house!!!!
Hope this helps

Whilst the reduced signal could be a cause it would not only be affected in the morning if this were the case here. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I listen to the same radio station, sometimes the radio is not even on, I thought I'd experiment this morning to see how long it would take to work.
Last night I checked & I had a fix of 7-8 GPS Sat's, this morning @ 7.30am I connected my XDAII run TT3 & at 8.30 I still had not reliable satellite signal.
It's going beyond a joke, am I at the stage where I have to buy a new GPS device or is there some answer to this madness??? |

Could this be because you are leaving for a longer time powered down overnight. I believe that there is a backup battery in the GPS device and have read somewhere that this is a common problem. _________________ Steve I |

I don't think so because I leave it plugged into the cigarette socket all the time & the green light is on so I now power is getting to it.
I don't do anything different in the mornings to the afternoon. |

I am having the same trouble. I have found that the cigarette charger thingy can be a bit loose and a bit of jiggling will help. |

let's throw in some weirdo questions. Do you have beam disabled or enabled? _________________ Lutz

You say the green light is on, it should not be on continuously but should be flashing on and off about once every second indication that it can see the satellites and has a fix. If the green light is on pregnantly you have a problem with the GPS receiver. _________________ Graham.
