It looks like the compass displays the point to point distance (as the crow flys) and not the actual journey distance!!

If that is the case what is the point in giving "line of sight" distance to earth bound navigators |

You tell me. To prove the point, if you have the GB map, using Advanced Planning create a route from Sheerness to Southend-on-Sea and run the Route Demo so you can see the compass.
Compass shows about 7 miles which is line of sight across 6 miles of water, actual route distance is about 65 miles.

It makes no sense using additional processing power to calculate the point to point distance when the actual route distance has already been calculated and displayed (if enabled) on the same screen.

I would be worried if I was given a distance and bearing to a target, and that distance was anything other than "as the crow flies". By default you are given the distance by road on the navigation screen anyway. _________________ Kam |

That's a good point once you understand the information that is being presented.
If you take my example above, for the first 30 miles of the journey, the distance shown on the compass actually keeps increasing.

Thought I was going mad yesterday. Went to Goodwood (used the full post code short by about 5 miles another issue) About 7 miles to go compass and distance to go start converging. Then distance to go starts to reduce faster than the compass line of sight distance. Then Distance to go becomes less than line of sight by about 1 mile. Have just run the route as a demo and get the same readings. Travelling down the A27.
Any thoughts on this then?
Mike
btw I was a passenger so I could observe without distraction |

Distance and bearing might make more sense if using in walking mode

I agree that that is really the only useful interpretation of the data. My point is that line of sight (over these distances) is the shortest.

I'd already retracted my original views - see earlier post:

Why can't we have the old compass back?
I find it dificult to see the compass on the map as the colours used are too close together,
