Hi
I'm about to get a ipaq hx 4700 and tomtom nav3.
I would like to get GPS assist as it looks like a useful program.
I read on this forum that it has problems with windows 2003 but that seemed to be a year or two ago. I cant find any upto date info on this forum or the gps assist site.
Does it work with this set-up?
Thanks for any info.

I cant beleive no one uses gps assist. I thought it was a popular app.
Or perhaps it dosn't work with win2003 hence no one uses it now. |

Yes it will, but two points worth bearing in mind is that firstly it is a shareware program that requires a registration key to be able to use it beyond it's 40 use free trial, and it's not uncommon for some to use all 40 up just setting it up.
Secondly it will not work if you upgrade to TT V5 until TomTom release a new SDK file and the Author of GPSAssist makes any required changes to the program. _________________ Graham.

Thanks XDA,
I was aware you had to pay for the program but I thought it had some good features so it would be worth the £20 or so. I may just go for 'checkPOInt' instead as it seems to be free but it doesn't do all the things GPS Assist does.
I was also aware that it wont work with Nav5 but then most of it's features seem to be included in Nav5 anyway.
Do you know if I will still need to do all that 'registry' stuff that is mentioned in the sticky 'gps assist' post in this forum, or has that been resolved?
Thanks for your help.

It has many good features, the main one being that it can handle the Pocketgpsworld speed related cameras with individual announcements for each speed zoned camera and is more configurable than CheckPOInt.
CheckPOInt v2.0.2.0 can also handle the speed zoned cameras and announcements and is free to install and use, If you decide to go with CheckPOInt reading this post
http://pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=16308
Will explain how to set it up and were to put all the various files.
Whilst TT V5 will use the Pocketgpsworld camera data base you wont be able to get individual announcements for the Speed related files as it wont be able to use the wave files needed for the announcements as the implication in V5 is the same as that in the GO series.
If you go the GPSAssist route yes it will need registering to obtain the key, some have had problems with registering on line and obtaining the key, but an email to Jo seems to quickly resolve it. _________________ Graham.

sorry, i you miss understood what i meant. I was referring to the problems detailed in this post:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=13287
It seems there are problems with GPSAssist and windows mobile 2003SE.
I was wanting to know if those have been resolved (maybe in the new rom update). I don't fancy hacking the registry of my shiny new PDA!
Thanks again

Yes I know, if you had read the posts on the GPSAssist forums you would have seen where DavidW.

Problem found and sorted - it's a bug in the ATI graphics chip driver in the hx4700/4705.
The solution is to flip a registry value and soft reset - there's a description of what needs to be done at brighthand.com and a tool that does it for you on the next page to that I've linked. I skipped the tool and used a registry editor.

The link DavidW is refering to is above _________________ Graham.

As far as I'm aware you still need to edit the registry. Once you have done that and rebooted you should be able to install and run GPSAssist.
Don't forget to backup the registry before making any changes. _________________ Graham.
