I am looking for a relatively inexpensive GPS unit that I can use primarily in my cars to get an accurate speed reading. I own a bunch of different vehicles / toys with a broken or no speedometer. I'm not concerned with navigation, mapping, etc. etc. Just a very large speed readout! It must be able to function properly inside a car too (stay locked).

Any suggestions??

No suggestions, but I'd like the same thing!
I already have a PDA with TomTom on it, but the mph read out is tiny, so if I could find a standalone programme that fills the screen with mph I'd be happy! (clearly this would not be instead of TT, but Like you I have a car with an essentially non-functioning speedo - made in 1927!)

Welcome

Have a look at the Garmin eTrex Venture for about £115 http://www.gpsw.co.uk/details/prod350.html

or the Vista Colour which has turn by turn routing and a colour screen for about £250

http://www.gpsw.co.uk/details/prod2338.html

To get the speed shown in big numbers on the Venture, you need to select a waypoint and navigate to it (anywhere will do) then go to the Compass screen and select "big numbers". On the Vista Colour, go to the Trip Computer screen and select big numbers.

The fields which are shown on the screen are user selectable, so you can choose from Speed, Trip Distance, Altitude, Max Speed, Average Speed, etc, etc to be shown on the display.

Go to Garmin's website and download the manual for both units to see what the screens look like. (Page 43 in the Vista-C manual or Page 17 in the Venture manual) or find a dealer who can demo the GPS to you.

I think that you have to select a waypoint to route to in the Venture before you can get to the Navigation screen which will show a compass and the Speed in big numbers.

Good luck!

If you already have a PDA then with a GPS receiver you could use GPS Speed Sentry, I have it on test and it works very well.

Thanks Darren - that looks great - I'll trial it first to make sure it suits, and then $15 looks a bargain!
(now I've just got to remember what version to download for my Ipaq 2210!

I did too, but how did you install it? I realise I'm being thick, but i assumed if I double clicked on the file on my PCs desktop whilst my PDA is connected via Activesync it should self install - but clearly it doesn't!

From the GPS Sentry Web Site
Quote:
If you downloaded the cab file then copy the cab file to your pocket pc and tap the cab file, this will install the application for you and place a shortcut in your programs folder (ie under start>programs)

This is the standard method of installing from .cabs, copy to the PPC and then locate using File Explorer and double-tap to install, the .cab then auto deletes itself.

Now I feel REALLY thick as I read the site info but somehow managed to miss the instructions! Done it now and it's installed fine!

Thanks for being patient!..

Used it for a couple of days and liked it enough to buy it - waiting for the registration id now...

I had hoped it would allow TomTom to work in the background at the same time so I could have the large speed read out on display whilst TT issued it's audio route instructions, but you can't run them both at the same time (this is probably obvious to most of you!)

That can be achieved but you'll need another piece of software, check out Franson's GPSGate, thisaloows multiple applications to access a single GPS data stream. They have a trial version for evaluation.

Blimey, thanks Darren.
I'll just have to decide if I want it enough to pay another $15 or so!..
