Carcomm are launching a PDA Amp soon. They had a range of new cradles on show at CeBIT including XDAII Handsfree cradles and the PDA sound amplifier. We'll bring more news as we get it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The only information we have is available in the press releases and on the TomTom website. It's a SiRF III Bluetooth GPS. |

Hi all,
Dave wrote: | Just to back David up on what he's said in his previous email. People downloading and using any utility that supports 7 digit postcode support like DigiTools etc, that hasn't been authorised and paid for in terms of a per seat license is running the software illegally. DigiTools doesn't have any license with Ordnance Survey who are the keeps of the license, and anyone using the data or similar data without a paid license fee to Ordnance Survey are effectively pirating/stealing the data. |
Now is more than a month I announced in this forum my own add-on for postcodes. Then I got a lot of good suggestions about my legal future, thanks. So I posted the same too in a lawyers forum to get some beta-testing.
Currently I'm just waiting for my contract with Ordnance Survey to be licensed partner, you know last details, lawyers making always difficult what was supposed to be easy, and yes, there is a lot of money in fees, so if you want I'm playing fool.
But not so fool as not to ask to Ordnance Survey just a single question: "Excuse me sir/madam, can you tell me, please, if PalmTop, the maker of TomTom, is already licensed partner?"
Do you imagine the answer? NO. They never have paid for a license.
So I did happyly.
OS is a public institute, no hiden contracts nor conditions. Everybody has the same fee, big, small and individual companies and everybody can get the information about who is and who is not.
I did read carefully the review about TTN 5. I saw the pictures. No one with 7 digits for UK postcodes. Error? Missed ones? Or just they are not 'cause they don't exist.
Of course, they are a bigger company than me. They have surely lawyers as staff. They can handle all that about fees and licenses in much less time than me. But still is a long process and April is very near.
Sorry, very sorry, if this is a shower of could water for some of you, but this is the true, at least it was at 8 March 2005, last time I did ask for.
Would it be the first time?
Regards,
Jose Adell

Hi all,
Trust me, whatever is the name of the company everybody in OS knows them, as they are licensed for mapping purpouses, of course, but not for seven digits UK postcode.
Any way, the only thing on top the table is my money, isn't it?

Nomada,
On a slightly diffreent tack how does the geographical accuracy of the postcodes in your program compare to the geographical accuracy of the postcodes in neils (for example). I remember Neil saying that some of his postcode accuracies were no better than 100 to 200 metres.
Obviously different postcodes will cover different sized areas but I would be interested to know (i've downloaded your program and I'm trying it out)
Cheers _________________ Rgds,

I never did hide my first database was made from OV2 files stored in this site. Later I did raise absolutely my own database.
So first one was common with Neils' one, not the actual.
Accuracy in this case is a relative term. Royal Mail defines what buildings/houses are covered with a given postcode, but not any exact point or coordinate for it.
Later OS defines what point INSIDE that group of buildings holds the postcode. This is the relative point. I guess they made the centre of a polygon that goes around the buildings. So that's my accuracy.
That's a really interesting point. As the postcode is 99'999% of cases inside that polygon you can know on what side of the street is.
My personal experience working as courier, and betatesters colleagues, was that a big percentage of cases related to big buildings, the accuracy was just the stepdoor.
Residential areas I never walked more than 20 yards back/forward.
BTW, my database is faulty AFAIK in Isle of Man, as that area is missed because I forgot IM postcodes when building up the database. In the other hand I'm been reported as exact for Northern Ireland for customers living over there that told me Neils' one was faulty for that area.
If you need more information just send me an email to j.adell@ntlworld.com, no need to buy it to get supported.

Those of you at CeBIT any word on whether TT 5 will be offered as software only? Based upon their BT hijacking in the past I wouldn't be surprised if they make me buy their receiver. This would be horrible for as most of us have decent receivers... it would be redundant and expensive.
Why did they even put out TT 4 USA if 5 is coming out only a couple months later? |

i've been going through tomtom's support site and found this:
tomtom support wrote: | TomTom Navigator 5 will also be available as a CD-based software only product. So, if you already own a GPS unit and memory card then you can still experience all the great features and most up-to-date maps of TomTom navigation. |
they already have tomtom navigator 5 as a choice of product in their web site's support section. _________________ tomtom 940 live/tt active dock holder/tt rds-tmc traffic receiver usb |

Hi dunos
You can do it. But Royal Mail doesn't deal with coordinates, just OS. I told you was a could water jag but... have a look on this, is the features page of official TomTom 5 web site: http://www.tomtom.com/products/features.php?ID=75&Language=1
May be I'm getting blind, may be I'm wrong informed, may be there is nothing new.
