Hello all
Newbie to this forum, but a 3 year GPS user. I've been using TOPO (1:100,000) for years now (currently with a GPSMAP 60C and laptops). It still appears to be the most useful of all topo products (all brands), with the exception of 24K TOPO for Nat'l Parks (if you happen to be in a N.P. -- I long for 24K topo, nationwide) Using the disks with the software, though, has created problems in addition to the inconvenience of always having to have the proper disk in place in the CD drive. In particular, in laptop-mobile GPS usage (automobile), in rough backcountry, the constant accessing of the CD drive in a 'bouncy' environment has damaged a CD drive of mine. I would like to have the CD data on the laptop's hard drive. I, apparently, have accomplished this: I have .dtb and .img files of all the TOPO disks in my Garmin folder (though I don't remember how I did this). Now, how do I make the viewer (v 6.5) access these data sets instead of the disks?

Check your registry to see where mapsource is directed to look. It appears the key is HKLM\Software\Garmin\Mapsource\Families\(your topo software). I see 3 entries in that key that point to where I have the map info on my hard drive. You could change yours to where the maps are on the hard drive.
The other option is to uninstall the product then reinstall it with the full install procedure. This should put the product on your hard drive and direct Mapsource where to look for it.
