I have a an Ipaq 4700, that i'd like to use for satnav in my car.
Having spent ages reading about the options available, I have
come down to the Tomtom wired GPS, with a Brodit Holder (with speaker
12-24 Volt. Straight cable for fixed installation and PS2-cable with TX, RX, 5V.)
What I can't work out is:
a) Will the Tomtom GPS receiver connect to the PS2-cable on the brodit holder ? If not do I need to buy a converter or am i barking up the wrong tree completely
b) I assume that if the above is ok, then i'll also need the appropriate HP charger for my Ipaq
anyone have any suggestions or recommend any particular retailers for the above
thanks |

The TomTom GPS won't connect to the Brodit holder you mention, as the TomTom GPS uses an RJ11 plug, not a 6 pin mini-DIN. I believe other wired GPSes will work with that Brodit holder - such as the Haicom range - but you should check.
From memory, Darren has one of those mounts (albeit for a different Pocket PC, but the idea is the same), so he should be able to answer questions on it (though whether he'll see this thread, considering he's at CeBIT, I don't know). I believe Darren is simply using that connector to power a Bluetooth GPS via a cable.
Such a Brodit mount will power the iPAQ - one described as "for fixed installation" is designed to be hardwired to 12V power.

Thankyou, you have confirmed what I was thinking.
Hardwiring the supply, is what want, but I didn't know whether the Tomtom GPS would work with that holder. I'll check out some other wired GPS receivers

If you want a Brodit mount, why do you want a Tom Tom wired GPS?
Tom Tom wired GPS has no obvious advantage over others so you should save yourself trouble and probably expense and get a Haicom or whatever that goes directly to the Brodit mount.
If you do want the Brodit/Tom Tom combination, it will work if you get the right connection, DIY or else. _________________ Pc-Mobile
