Well it is that time of the year again when anybody who is vaguely connected to any form of technology flies out to Hannover for the annual CeBIT exhibition. PocketGPSWorld.com will be represented by Mike, Darren, Lutz and Robert. If all of our gadgets work we will be reporting live from the exhibition, bringing you all the news and gossip as it happens.

We are already aware of a number of new products and announcements that will be made at the exhibition, which are all centred around GPS and Navigation applications. We have a number of meetings set up with the Directors and Senior Executives of some of the main GPS companies, including Destinator, NavMan, TeleAtlas, and TomTom.

So if there is a specific question that you would like us to ask, or a point you would like the Senior Management teams to address then this is your chance to be heard. Post into the GPS questions? thread and we will take your views to the GPS manufacturers. We cannot guarantee to pose all the questions, but the companies really do appreciate constructive feedback from usergroups like ours.

What we will be doing during the exhibition is posting the news items into this forum, and then moving them into the most appropriate forum for the report. This will give us a single point of reference for all the announcements and items. When you reply or add your comments to these messages they will stay in the appropriate forum.

We believe that the communications facilities there will be far better than last year with WiFi being available throughout the entire Fairgrounds. With a bit of luck we may even be able to host a live video link back to Dave who will be holding the fort back here.

If the current rumours are correct and TomTom do announce the next release of their PDA navigation software, please could you try and obtain the answers for following:

1) Have they left in the avoid area feature?
2) Will it have an option to adjust the routing for example shortest, quickest etc?
3) When they expect to start shipping?
4) Will they be offering an upgrade and if so what will the costs be?

If ALK are there please could you ask them:

1) When Traffic may become available?
2)When they expect to be announcing their upgrade for this year?

If possible try and gain some ideas on improvements etc they are working on.

I am looking forward to hearing the news from the show.

Thank you for an excellent site, keep up the good work.

Starters for 10:

Can the manufacturers give an indication of likely shipping dates for their new releases?
Can Navigon advise whether they are preparing a new product, and how far away from release is it (slightly different question to the above)?
In every instance of new software, can you confirm who the map provider is and the map release date? (There have been a few topics that suggest TeleAtlas are gaining market share over Navteq - and software has often been released with really old map data)

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know

;-)

Cheers

I would like to know your first comments about Navicore software, after you have had a meeting with them.

They are also at CeBit, and will join the competition about european customers.

I am about to buy a Mitac Mio 168 in the next month or so,

I would like to know if there are any other PDA`s with integrated GPS due for release.

I`d hate to buy the 168, then find a better one come out 3 weeks later.

Nige.

Questions for the TomTom Pocket PC crowd:
Walking still an option?
SLA for Traffic in the UK?
Traffic across Europe?
Downloadable Maps
Itinerary?
Congestion Charge (and how to update it!)?
Downloadable default POI
Is the a POI warner (as in V5)?
Will there be a SDK (e.g. for Trafcam to use)?
Full UK Postcode Search (as in V5) and have they got copyright from either the Post Office or Ordnance Survey if using Lat and Long?

I could go on...

Mapopolis (if in attendance):

Only on question - Voice... The dalek's are coming.....

Already out are Acer and Asus models, and of course the Garmin one but the price difference is quite big.

Anything announced during an exhibition will not be immdeiately available so I would not count on that if you want one now or soon.

If VitoTech are there, perhaps you could ask them why they don't answer emails.

I purchased Smart Map and asked them a few baisc questions on how best to prepare the maps .... (nothing in the documentation), but have no reply from them.

I have the 'paid-for' version.

Sorry there was no Asus. I was misinformed. Asus did release a BT-100 GPS so that must be the mis-impression.

Information of Acer n35 should be on Acer UK site.

Question for TomTom

Will it be possible for the TomTom Pocket PC verison to allow the purchase of individual maps for Europe. I travel once a year to France on holiday, I could make use of the detailed French map, but, as I have no need for the remainder of Europe, £100 for the whole of Europe is overkill for 2 weeks holiday and I will end up making use of just the major routes of Europe.

Thanks

Hello Mike,

would you please ask someone from Garmin when the new Streetpilots C330/C320 will be available in Europe.

Thanks and kind regards from Germany

Can they indicate if and when Eastern Europe maps will be added.
E-Europe will be very important in the future, economics & tourist wise.

Yes, that's what I'm interested in, too. I'm permanently checking all the info available for updates of Navtech or Teleatlas mapping data concerning Eastern European countries. Slovakia, for some reason is quite omitted. No navigation software has usable map of Slovakia yet. Navigon has something, but it's only shallow map, not usable outside Bratislava. I wonder which producer of navigation software will include usable maps of Eastern European countries in their release first.

What about TOMTOM maps for Greece.
Teleatlas has digital maps as far as I know. Will they use them?
