Found this cool UK postcode overlay, breaks the uk down into regions. You juck click on the POI region and enter your postcode and bingo it will take you straight to your door. I bought this off ebay where it's had amazing feeback.
www.poisoft.co.uk is the link. Seems to work for all versions of tomtom. |

You are aware that you have been ripped off, right? This data is freely available from our site, and for TomTom versions up to 3.x there's a tool available to find a postcode and navigate to it. _________________ Lutz

Yeah I know its free but its in loads of different overlays, too many to load on at once. With this there all compiled together so they can be loaded at once. Nice bit of software, and for £2.49 I thought it was a bargain.
Also I know there is software out there to compile it but it takes ages so worth it really, to save my time and effort |

Skinz...thanks for your post detailing the Postcode POI's. I downloaded the overlays from your link, and it works perfectly on TT3 v4.40 for Palm on a T3 and I agree that for £2.49 its well worth the price of a pint.
Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best, and if this guy can make £2.50 a throw for something that people don't have the time or inclination to do themselves for whatever reason, then good luck to him !
Ibendlin : lets stay positive about peoples GPS experiences ! |

The same data can be obtained for free from the following link:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtompoi.php
Scroll down until you find the UK, and then look for the “Code Search” POIs.

Robert, I told them that already, but they claim that our format is not convenient enough and they are willing to pay the money just for the formatting.
Now what do we do - change the format and sell it for two quid ? ;-) _________________ Lutz

Go for it, Lutz!
I think that people have the idea that if you are charged for something, it will be better quality than the free equivalent - not always the case.

It can also be downloaded in 9 overlays from Timmyo' site (for free),
There is also a plug in at http://www.digitools.co.uk/ukpostcode.php that works very well. At first glance it appears to use the same data as Tim's. _________________ Richard

Lutz,
Bo Peep has got it right, it’s “perceived value”. People think that they’ve paid £2.49 or £2.50 for a product, so it must be better than the free version.
I wonder if we set-up a postal service to install POIs onto PDAs, where people send us their PDAs, and we charge £50.00 or more plus post and packing for the service. Do you think we’d get any takers?

There'll always be punters who will pay out good money on the promise of the golden crock at the end of the rainbow, (e.g. sending off money, lots of it, on the promise of a larger, or not, return). _________________ Richard

In fact we do actually want to learn from this. If our files are not in a convenient format then we need to change that. Same for the description - if you feel it is not clear enough then we need to adjust there too.
If you could suggest how we need to change our format then please let us know. _________________ Lutz

The point that others are making in this thread is one I agree with. The Pocket GPS World team and moderators all put in a lot of unpaid work on the site. We're happy to do this because we enjoy doing it - we like sharing our interest in GPS and navigation with others.
As Lutz indicates, we'll do our best to help people - if we can repackage our data and write new instructions then if people let us know what they feel needs to be done, we'll do our best to do it. We are volunteers, though - and we all have a life outside Pocket GPS World!
All our files, including the camera database, are there for free download - as is the support and advice we offer in the forums is free, too.
It grates a little when people make money from the fruits of other people's hard work that has been shared freely. I've written numerous sets of what I believe to be good instructions for people in the forums for free, as well as troubleshooting a lot of people's problems. Nobody has offered me payment for all this work, nor do I expect it. I'm grateful for those that take the trouble to thank me.
We've found numerous copies of the speed camera database appearing on eBay - which I feel is something of a betrayal of everyone who has freely contributed information to the database. That really has been a community project - people contribute the information they have and share in the fruits of everyone's contributions. However, it takes a lot of effort from those responsible for checking and entering people's submissions - Darren and now Richard have put a lot of work into this.
We've found POI files that Pocket GPS World holds the copyright on, or that the copyright holders have given to us to distribute, turning up on other web sites without permission.
It is a free market, but it certainly helps when people remember that this site, in essence, is run by volunteers.

Not everybody wants to download all the Post Code areas at one time, and there is plenty of help within this site on how to install them.
Another point is how complete is the data in the files. All the Post Files that I have seen have quite a few omissions. See the different threads on Post Codes for them. I would like to be very certain that any data was complete before parting with any money.
The Post Office data doesn't come cheap, and one is likely to assume that the 'compiled files' are compiled from the same, or similar, data as on the POI page.
The program from Digitools is probably as good as it gets for a Pocket PC with its speed in locating a Code. Unfortunately, it's no good for TTG.
Even this data is not 100% complete!! _________________ Richard
