Can anyone please advise how to use the "Track Recording" function under >Settings>Routing? What do I do with the log file that is generated?

In V2, you could use Oldie's Log Converter programme, available from here and then import the track into, say, Autoroute. This would then give you a breadcrumb trail of your movements. Hopefully, Navman haven't altered the format in V3, and if they haven't it should still work. Note that the data log is saved to the SD card, so make sure you have enough room.

You could also play back the log from within SmartST.

This function never worked for me in SmartST V2. Haven't tried it with SmartST V3 yet, but I will. Can anyone confirm that the recording and playback of log files work with the V3 SW? It could be a useful feature sometimes.

Tim,

I installed the Log Converter application but realised that it only supports the TomTom log format (.pgl extension). SmartST outputs log files with the extension .gps. Have you actually tried using the tool with Navman log files?

After looking at Oldies webb page I realised that there's a newer version (version 2.02) of the program available that supports .gps log files. Maybe the new version could be added to the download section of this site too.

Sorry Ulf,

I didn't realise that the Log Converter programme hosted here wasn't the latest one. I have V2.01, which Oldie wrote to include the .gps format of Navman logs after I sent him one of my Navman logs. He then sent me the programme.

No probs. I just sent a message to Oldie asking him to upload version 2.02 of the application to the Download section of Pocket GPS World.

Tim, have you tried playing back a recorded log file in SmartST V3? As I said yesterday, this never worked for me in SmartST V2. Nothing happened when I pressed "Play".

Cheerio,

Ulf

No, I transfer the logfiles to my laptop and convert them, then view them using Autoroute. I've never tried playing one on my PPC.

Nice utility and useful too to compare the routings of various software packages - works well with navman .gps files

This thread does remind me of the dissapointment i had with navman's attitude when i questioned them a long while ago about the recording function. It essentially wen't something like this:

Q. I can't seem to get the recording function to play back
A. It's only for sending logs to navman in case of problems

Q Then why does it say you can record and playback routes in the manual
A. It's only for sending logs to navman in case of problems

Q If it's only for sending files to navman then why is there a play button
A. It's only for sending logs to navman in case of problems

I thought they might at least say the manual's wrong but still doesn't explain why they put in a play button that doesn't do anything.

Hi,
Mine seems to be saved as a .log file when i view it on my PC, Not a .gps file as LOGCONVERTER wants to see. What do i do to use the file?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

If you look in the directory on your PPC where you chose to save the log file, you should have a .gps file too. Try transfer this to your PC via Active Sync. That worked for me.

Ulf,

The logfile might be saved differently on an iCN. It's also possible that just changing the extension from .log to .gps will do the trick and make the file readable using LogConverter.
