The list of compatible handsets is published in their press release produced above, the Motorola handsets are not included although of course they may expand compatability later, we have no information on this. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I wonder if the new TT Mobile 5 will ship with the new GPS unit only? I am not sure how this will effect existing TTM owners if they want to upgrade, or for that matter existing BT GPS owners. _________________ Audi S4

The phones that TomTom list as compatible suggest that it will only work with series 60 Symbian phones. The A1000 is Symbian 7.0. It wasn't compatible with the previous version of TomTom mobile. |

We haven't received any information on how TTN Mobile 5 is to be sold. Whilst they will almost certainly offer it as before bundled with the new BT GPS receiver it remains to be seen whether it will also be available as a software only package to the retail chain.
In resepect of upgrades though, I would think you existing Mobile users will be offered a software only upgrade that allows you to continue to use your existing TT BT GPS. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Question
Can I use TomTom MOBILE 5 with other GPS units?
Answer
TomTom MOBILE 5 can be used with other Bluetooth GPS units as long as they use the NMEA protocol.
We recommend that you use the TomTom Wireless GPS MkII with TomTom MOBILE 5 as the software will configure the Bluetooth connection automatically. The TomTom Wireless GPS MkII also offers superior performance in built up areas. |

Cheers, I hadn't spotted that, so yes it would appear that they are opening up the product to other 3rd party receivers, hopefully this also suggests that it will in future be offered as software only. _________________ Darren Griffin

I believe the ideal would be if TomTom Mobile 5 uses the same sort of model as is used for TomTom Navigator on the Pocket PC. With that, you can either buy a bundle with a GPS receiver or supply your own GPS receiver.
The software is protected using activation with a Product Code from the box, and a Device Code that relates to something unique in the device's hardware. You enter both into ttcode.com, which gives you an Activation Code to unlock the software.

reports from 3GSM seem tio indicate that TomTom want to maximise profit on the bundle before they offer the software only version. ... _________________ Lutz

Where does it say that TomTom have added Full UK postcode support? TomTom told me quite recently when I requested this feature that they had no plans to put full postcode support into any of their products citing the reason that it doesn't significantly speed up entering addresses according to their experiences in their focus group tests. I'd find it amazing if they'd changed their minds and implemented the full postcode support in only a few days... |

Also the screenshots of TTN 5 on their website show that it only has 4 digit postcode support as before (but of course, they could be outdated from an earlier version of TTN 5 or taken from the original TTN). |

Under the section that says "WHATS NEW".
There is Postcode support (UK and Netherlands only)
Now TomTom Mobile already supports postcode support Europe wide. So the implication here is that either they are dropping postcode support for the rest of Europe or they are improving UK and Holland to full postcode search. _________________ Mike Barrett |

No, its for the Smartphone platform only. A PPC version will follow without doubt. _________________ Darren Griffin |
