Memory-Map.co.uk have just released the Ordnance Survey version of Memory-Map Navigator. The latest version is now 4.4.0.

I have not upgraded to the official release yet but I have been running an early release on my iPAQ 4700 and boy does it look good in VGA mode.

To upgrade to the latest version simply start the PC Navigator application and then select Web->Check for updates. This will take you to the download section of the Memory-Map website.

The following is a screenshot of the new Memory-Map 2004 OS in landscape mode:

The above picture is half sized. Click on the image above to see a full sized screen shot.

You will notice the small green icon on the left. This hides the menu bar giving more real estate for the map.

Thanks for the update.

How do I enable landscape mode? I'm using PocketPC version 3.0.11171. Do I need something newer?

Many thanks

PS Your screenshot brought back alarming memories of last August. Took my 6-year-old daughter for her first 'real'camping experience by Stickle Tarn. It rained all night and the tent leaked like a sieve. She slept like a log while I knelt over her all night catching the rain on the back of my head!

Hopefully Mike will be along soon to give you a definitive answer, but many applications require Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for landscape support. It looks like Memory Map may be amongst them, judging by the landscape orientation of the standard Pocket PC screen objects.

Very sorry for the slow reply. I had to actually work today Sad

Well I was with Robert picking up his new car!!

Any back on topic. The landscape mode will only work with PDAs that have WM2003 SE software running on them.

The only exception that I am aware of is TomTom Navigator HP Edition this uses GAPI and writes directly to the screen. TTN HPE can display the screen in any of 4 rotations.

Thanks, Mike.

For those who don't have WM2003, I've found a program called dotpocket, which can change screen orientation and resolution, amongst several other amazing things, such as operating your pocket pc from your desktop! V useful for grabbing screenshots.

You can download a 30-day trial at www.dotpocket.com.

Cheers

Hi, I've been searching for something like this for ages for my C500. I already have TomTom Mobile and I think it's excellent. Will this work on my C500, and if not is there anything else that will let me view OS maps?

Cheers.

As far as I know there is nothing that will display OS Maps on a SmartPhone at the moment.

So much for my cunning plan then. Guess I'll be getting the Orange SPV M2000 when it comes to upgrade time in a few months :o)

The 2210 already has WM2003 on it. The landscape screen capabilities come from WM2003 Second Edition. As far as I know there is not a version available for the 2210.

HP have indicated that they will not release Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition upgrades for any existing iPAQs, and I can't see them going back on that policy now as Windows Mobile 2005 is likely to be out in a couple of months.

Windows Mobile 2005 is likely to be released to the device manufacturers in mid April 2005. I have no idea at the moment which machines HP will release upgrade kits for. If their behaviour with Pocket PC 2002 to 2003 upgrades is anything to go by, it will be all of the current range of iPAQs (maybe less the budget model - the rz1710 may miss out just as the 1910 did amongst the 2002 -> 2003 upgrades), as well as some older machines that were bought heavily by corporate users.

The iPAQ h2210 may get a Windows Mobile 2005 upgrade, but I have my doubts. Only time will tell what upgrade kits HP release.

WM2003SE is not a great leap forwards from Pocket PC 2003 - the main reason for it was to support new hardware, particularly Pocket PCs with other than QVGA screens. Apart from landscape support, the only other significant change is WPA support for wireless networking, though I believe HP had released WPA for all Pocket PC 2003 iPAQs with built in Wi-Fi.

However, I appreciate that it's frustrating for anyone who wants to use software like Memory Map in landscape mode that they can't do so without WM2003SE.
