Darren has just completed the review of the new Medion MDPNA150.

Medion already have a major presence in the Pocket PC and Pocket PC-GPS arena and their products have been available in the ALDI chain of discount grocery stores across UK and mainland Europe, the car accessory retailer Halfords here in the UK and Medion's On-Line E-store. Now they too have released a PND based on the Mitac Mio 138 reference hardware design which is also used by Navigon.

The MDPNA150 is in fact a Mitac Mio 138 running WinCE.Net 4.2. This should not be confused with Windows Mobile which although related is altogether different. Out of the box the unit hides the underlying operating system completely (more of this later) and boots straight to a welcome screen that gives you only three options, Navigation, MP3 Player and Settings.

This is virtually identical to the Navigon BlueMedia PNA Sat-Nav except that this Medion uses TeleAtlas data whereas the Navigon BlueMedia uses Navteq data.

Can you say if either of these have full 7 digit postcode searching ability?

You say in your review that the RRP of the Medion PNA is £299.99 and state easydevices.co.uk as the supplier. However, they sell the unit for £299.99 ex VAT or £351 inc VAT. This makes the Medion unit only £49 cheaper than the Navigon PNA which has better software, NavTeq maps and 21 country street-level maps.

If you search the net you can find the Navigon PNA for £389 inc VAT making the difference only £38.

I guess the Navigon does come with European street level maps as well, plus (according to the literature) has post code support. And I've seen it for £388. If I can stick 'safety' cameras in it then it will be top of my list.

Yes, I have been alerted to the pricing issue and have modified the review accordingly.

POI-Warner have a BlueMedia compatible client available to allow Speed Camera POI Installation and Alerts.

There have been price fluctations with the MDPNA and a recent drop has now resulted in the MDPNA coming down to £299 inc. VAT.

Can anyone tell me if Medion PNA, Navigon BlueMedia PNA and the new Mitac Mio268 (/269 with 2gb storage) is close too identical ?

The Medion MDPNA150 and Navigon BlueMedia share the same hardware platform but use different navigation software. The Medion uses a variant of Destinator whereas Navigon use their own software.

The Mio 268/269 is a different hardware device albeit very similar but uses Navigon's software.

If someone would rank these products, would it be :

1. Mio 269 (because of the buildt in 2.5GB hd + MMC/SD slot for MP3 and Navigon software beeing better than Destinator.)
2. Mio 268 (because of price, and Navigon software beeing better than Destinator.)
3. Navigon BlueMedia (Navigon software beeing better than Destinator.))
4. Medion MDPNA150

..or not ?

"Can I install TomTom on this?"

After reading the part of the Rewiew about picking up the WinCE full part, I see a "maybee" here.

Is this possible?

Sadly no, TTN3 fails because of the Landscape screen orientation. Perhaps the future Navcore version 'may' work but I cannot verify this.

Apparently the Mio 268/269 use TeleAtlas data (according to Mio's website - it does seem odd as it also uses Navigon software which usually comes with NavTeq data), most people rate NavTeq higher than TeleAtlas for coverage and accuracy. It's probably most of a concern if you ever find yourself in Ireland ...
